DX on PSK
K5PAX
Sean, Tom et al...
PSK is definitely the digital DX mode of choice, at least as seen from this end of the world. In looking back at the logs, I've worked over 75 countries on PSK since last July. Many countries are incredibly active, with multiple stations logged (XE,LU,PY, CX, HP, HR, DK, F, I, JA, YV, CE...). On a routine basis I work more DX on PSK than on any other mode. The Phone and RTTY modes seldom have more than 1-2 workable stations on any given day, outside of contests. PSK routinely has 5-10 on several bands. Right now I work 15M morning and evening local time, and typically can work 1-2 Asian or European stations on weekdays. I can also routinely work Central and South American stations in the afternoon/evening on 20M. There is no other mode evening half as productive from out here in the Desert Southwest. This AM was an incredible instance of what can happen when the solar Flux numbers rise -- we had just a little blip, and the EU stations started rolling in. In 2 hours I tuned CT,OK,OH, UR, RV, LZ, PJ, F, G, I, ON, and more. Worked about 5 of them. I can't wait for the solar cycle to swing back up. During contests, RTTY and other modes are still ahead of PSK, but I think not for long. I log many countries during the big tests, typically 20+ countries with a little casual contesting. I am seeing more of those same callsigns on PSK though, so I think folks are broadening their mode use. I'm happy to see that some contests are giving bigger QSO score weight to all digital (see the announcement on EQSL about their April contest). This should sweeten the pot for PSK participants in contests. I've looked at a bunch of software, and still prefer to use WinPSK 2.13 for my main package on PSK for DX. It was written by the gentleman who wrote the PSK drivers used in Digipan and a bunch of the other packages. It has no muli-signal properties, no logging functions, no rig control components, but has an infinitely adjustable squelch -- I can tailor the suppression to the noise conditions on the bands, and pull out weak signals much better than on other packages. For contesting, I use other programs, including QuikPSK. WinPSK also has excellent switch on the fly abilities for QPSK and PSK63, two of my favorite modes. I think QPSK should be the mode of choice for DX and especially for QRP. Its error correction is tailor made for weak signal work, far outweighing the loss of S/N performance. It is not as good as MPSK for DX, but is much easier to work for most folks -- just toggle the mode on the software package. That's how it looks out here in New Mexico. I'd love to hear what others are seeing. Harvey K5PAX

Re: how many countries have been activated on psk?
Thomas Birch <birchtr@hotmail.com>
Sean and All,
I've put 95 countries in the log here in Georgia on PSK and quite a few more that I have seen on the air but not worked. Plus a few more that I have seen on the cluster but not heard. As for software, I have settled into MixW here. Its multi-mode capability makes it a one stop shop for my digital and cw operating. Getting set to move the QTH to Indiana here so look for me in the coming weeks with a new call. Not sure which 9-land call I'm gonna get yet. It'll be either N9SV or AG9V. Will let reflector know as soon as the FCC lets me know. 73, Tom - AG4SV _________________________________________________________________ Find and compare great deals on Broadband access at the MSN High-Speed Marketplace. http://click.atdmt.com/AVE/go/onm00200360ave/direct/01/

how many countries have been activated on psk?
g4ucj.shack <g4ucj.shack@...>
I must admit to being amazed by the amount of PSK31 activity these days - it
s great! just had a look through my log and noticed that I have over 1000 different calls logged in psk. It seems that psk31 is taking over as the number 1 digital mode, certainly there is far more in the way of PSK about than RTTY now. Also more and more countries are becoming active on the mode, I have no idea how many countries/entities have actually been activated in this mode to date and I hope it becomes part of every dx-pedition itinery to operate psk31 (just as they would operate SSB, CW or RTTY). I also wonder what programs you use for PSK (didn't someone do a survey ont his sometime ago?). I'm using MixW and PSK31 Deluxe (the 'super browser' mode in that is brilliant as you can see every QSO on the band at the same time, so never miss a thing!) - I have found that I can run both programs simultaneously using the same soundcard without affecting the performance of either (which means I can monitor psk31 and psk 63/other modes at the same time and also keep my log up to date). Has anyone used Multi PSK and what are your feelings on this compared to other programs? I also noticed that I have quite a few club members in my transmitting log - if any of you would like or need a QSL, I now have some colour ones printed and would be glad to send them to you via the bureau. It's nice to hear you about on the bands, even though I can't reply I will spot you on the dx clusters and hopefully drum up some trade for you. 73 Sean Gilbert, G4UCJ / G4001SWL PODXS: 139 FISTS: 2860 RSARS: 3575 GWQRP: 67 RSGB COUNTY MORSE EXAMINER RX: IC756 + CI-V; MFJ 1026; SEM Multifilter ANT: Miller RX Vertical (1.8-30MHz) @ 12m; FET Preamp; FC107 QTH: Aylesbury, Bucks., England.
