Wow,  got home and found 20m filthy with what appeared to be FT-8 signals on 14070.  Did someone forget to tell those guys that’s a PSK frequency ???

Well,  did work Matthew in GA, but thunderclouds were moving in and skies got really dark. Shut down the rig.

On another front, I approved a bunch of endorsements for KC3FL & W9SMR.  Way to go guys  !!!!

Current APE Schedule

I created a spreadsheet to help keep track of all the APE madness. This information will get posted on the website, but I'm using this as a tool to keep track of information. I figured you might as well have it as well. Feel free to add your own APE, or update your plans.

40M FIRECRACKER SPRINT - RESULTS 2019

40M FIRECRACKER SPRINT - RESULTS  2019

This year there were 40 logs submitted - up from last year’s 30 logs. Given the propagation conditions, I think we did an admirable job in spite of the hardships.

Top Dawg and 1st place in High Power was Steve VA3TPS of Fenelon Falls, ON with 51 QSOs and 1,377 points. Steve recently finished the TDW as First Place Bonus Station and 2nd place overall.  Another stellar showing from Steve…congrats!!

Second place High Power was Bill, N4GBK OF Hertford, NC. Bill can be seen in just about any/all events and contests. Third place High Power was Bob, KK6KMU of Oceanside, CA. Bob won Bonus Station 2nd place in the TDW. Congrats to both of you.

1st Place Medium Power was Pete, NN9K, with 48 QSOs and 1,344 points. Pete is a newer member who in a bit more than 1 year has collected 198 QSOs for LONP. Second Place went to Jerry, N9AVY. Jerry is closing in on his goal of 1,000 LONP with 928 QSOs. Third Place goes to Joe, WM9I. I wonder if Joe’s twin brother Jeff, WM9F had something to do with Joe’s noteworthy participation?

1st Place Low Power was Steve, W3HF with 43 QSOs and 1,204 points. Steve is 070 #025 and holds the club record with 1,601 LONP QSOs. He again shows us he’s a “real contenda”. Second Place goes to Jim, K5SP. In spite of tough conditions and low power, Jim lit up both coasts from TX. There were only two entries in this challenging category.

1st Place QRP Power was Karl, K5KHK (#2645) who has been a member for just one year and achieved LONP in April. Great job under lousy conditions. We had non-member Jeff, W5BKZ enter as QRP power with a QSO with our own AK hero WL7CG, Alan, who may have convinced Jeff to upload his log. Perhaps Jeff will join us soon.

The new “All Amateurs Welcome” policy continues to enhance our overall experience. It was great to see that Roger, N8TCP finished in 12th place overall. He joined us following the TDW Contest in June as 070 #2693. Also participating was Fernando, YV4YY, 070 #2692. He put DX Bonus points in 6 member’s logs. It’s great to have a new DX to chase.

Special thanks goes to Alan, WL7CG (#2100) who passed out Alaska bonus points to 10 members and Will, KC3EOV (#2216) who put Delaware in the logs of 4 members. We hope to see both of you on the waterfall regularly!

Thanks to all who submitted logs.  Stickers will be in the next mailing.  Complete results are available by clicking Firecracker Results

Now, get ready for our next 070 Event, Endorsement Daze – LONP and WALC-NA

Starting Friday, August 9 to 11. Check out the announcement in the Reflector at Endorsement Daze

As an aid to planning your APE, and activating a most wanted Grid Square, I put together the attached using Bob's - KK6MKU - Map and Steve's - W3HF - Most Wanted list.  The Top 40 are highlighted in yellow and the listing on the right is the number of QSOs that have been logged by 070 members with those grids.

Going APE is great fun!  Going APE from one of those grids almost guarantees you'll be the station creating a pile-up!  That is an experience every ham should have at least once!

Dave-
Welcome to chasing grids!  It can be both a lot of fun and very frustrating!

Attached are a couple of Excel Spreadsheets (old .xls format) that make it easier to track your progress on grids.  The first - Grid Master Spreadsheet - is just a listing of all the grids needed for the 070 Endorsement.  I put it together - with help and guidance from Steve, W3HF, when I first started working on grids.  The second - Maidenhead Grid Map Master - is a very clever spreadsheet created and offered up to the group by Bob - KK6KMU, It is arranged to reflect the grids on a map of the USA. The Red filled squares are grids that are in the lower 48 but are not required for the 070 grid awards.  When you work a grid, you simply use "fill" to color the cell for that grid!  Super!

This morning I created a folder - 070 Grid Chase - in the files section of this group.io and uploaded both these files to it.  So if the attachements won't open for some reason, you can download them from the files section.

Enjoy the chasing grids and hope to work you soon!

GO APE – Plan it - Do it!

stan W9SMR

Go APE!

Activate a County, State or National Park.

Put a rare Grid on the air!

Throw an antenna into a Roadside Rest-Area tree!

Join Justin, KC2GIK under the Cape May Lighthouse
Take over a Pontoon Boat

Now it is time to start planning to GO APE!

For our newer members, APE stands for August PSK-31 Expedition - sort of a 070 version of Field Day.  But much more relaxed.  The rules are pretty simple – basically, go at least 20 miles from home and go portable.  You can find the complete details by clicking here-APE Rules.  Check it out!

And no, you don't need a battery or generator.  You can use commercial power if it is available.  You just cannot use preexisting amateur radio equipment or antennas at the site.   But, you don't have to "rough it."  You can operate from an air conditioned cabin at the lake if you want.

Talk it up to your friends from Field Day and your local Radio Club.  Convince them to join you in going APE!  You can go alone or you can have as many operators as you want.  Each operator may use their own call sign.  You can go APE for one day or the entire month of August.

To qualify for the 070 APE Award, you need only 20 two-way QSO’s.

Be sure to post your plans here on the Reflector at least 2 weeks prior to your operation.  Or you can send your plans to the APE Award Manager, Bryon, W7RIV.  APE Manager

Start planning!  August is just over 2 weeks away !

Hi Dave,

What grids do  you need?  I usually operate if some has a specific grid request, but if I have operated from that grid, I usually don't again.  So Please send me you grid requests and I will try to be on the air in those grids.  I will be on in the morning from EM94, EM95, E M96 and EM97, FM07.

Dick

Start planning APEs

Justin Mattes--KC2GIK

Alright folks time to start planning those APEs. I again want to invite
members down to the Cape May Lighthouse (USA-127) to do an APE. I don't
have a working PSK-31 setup at the house so basically I am providing some
space in Cape May in view of the lighthhouse to setup shop! I tried this a
few years ago with Steve, W3HF and we figured out the garage is the best
place to setup your gear. I really want to get back on the air even if the
bands aren't great

Let me know

Barry,

This is not a contest.

It is a Members' Meet & Greet with a bonus of working on Endorsement Stickers.

There is no rush. Chat about your LONP status, your Rig, your other Hobbies or just exchange your name, the RST, your QTH and Grid.

So let the mood guide you and enjoy our marvelous PODXS 070 Club!!

Hope that will work for y'all!
