Rick,
this morning I found this link via Peter Parkers’s “Daily Antenna”: http://www.kk5jy.net/LoG/
Maybe that saves you some surfing and gives you more time for reading (or pondering) ;)

Well you triggered some new thoughts Jerry!  My K3 is equipped for a separate receive antenna and while I don't have room for a beverage, a multi turn 4' box loop could certainly hide behind the house.....  Got some surfing, reading, and pondering to do.  Thanks!

The thing I love most about this hobby is there is always something new to learn!

Rick:

I’ll be happy if tat site helped one person a bit.

Am up against same problems here that you have.  Had a home brew Alpha-Delta DX-b twin sloper (need tower for that), it worked quite well for a couple years, but it had some problems . Went out and spent the money on a brand new Alpha-Delta and put it up. Never made a lousy Q on it  .

One of the things DXers use on 160m is a vertical to transmit. They also use a beverage for receive because Beverage is less noise. Sweet thing about Beverage is that it doesn’t need height… many are run along fences and we all know that fences aren’t very high.  Someone sells a baluns for Beverages to better match tem to receiver.  BTW, Beverage antenna are so named for their creator a PHd. , Dr. Beverage  and has nothing to do with beer can verticals.

On receive you could also use some sort of a loop. Most loops are magnetic are less noisy on receive as well as somewhat directional. Had a small 2 foot box loop I used to use to chase DX on AM broadcast band.  It worked very well and found out that directionality was good; especially when I rotated it on BOTH the horizonal & vertical plains.  Used to live about 6 miles or so from WGN-am 720 and was able one night to null out carrier (50,000 wats) and hear the Cuban station on same frequency.  Building one for 160m should be easy as there are plans all over the net.  It would fit on patio, if you have one, and by adding a scavenged TV rotor you could turn it remotely.  Be sure not to use a metallic mast.

Know that antennas are not always as successful as we’d like them to be, but with some experimenting you may get good results.  It’s a good time with band conditions  so crummy to start planning on antenna projects to work on during summer months…  still have snow here in IL and in some parts of MN/WI  snow may not melt til June !  😊  Have a 160m loop I started to build a couple years ago (my own design), but got too busy and it got pigeon-holed; might be time to look at it again.  It basicall a 4 ft. box loop built with PVC pipe and orange hook up wire.

Good luck.

Thanks Jerry!  I had a look at the site and it looks like some interesting info.  Don't know if I'll ever buy any of the books, but the free stuff on Baluns was a nice write-up.  I downloaded them to my "reference" files.  I'm intrigued by 160m and would really like to be able to work there regularly.

My 160m challenge has 3 factors - small lot, height - no way to get anything above 25', and HOA rules.  I've tried top loading my Hustler 6BTV with a +/- 18' wire off the 80m resonator (worked, but marginal results) and a 53' end fed Inverted L using a 20' kite pole (temporary setup that worked, but also marginal results).  I did manage to get to the 20 Qs required for the Top Band Endorsement but it took me 2 Great Pumpkins, 2 Triple Plays, and a Double Header to do it.

My backyard (where I can have one vertical less than 25' - no wire antennas!) is 15' by 75' backing on to a protected wetland.  Stay out of there!  One of my ham friends told me to "Give up on 160 - you can't beat the laws of physics!"  If anyone has any suggestions for something I could try, I'd like to hear them.

FYI:  for those who work or want to 160m PSK31 this site is allegedly one of the best sites around for info.  There were some comments by L.B. Cebik  (SK) whom I knew many years ago on 10m along with his wife.  The 2 of them used to run The Chattanooga Choo Choo chapter of 10-10 Net Internation.  Good people.

Haven’t looked at this ON5AU site, but I’m hoping it may be worthwhile. If it isn’t don’t blame me.

Marcel De Canck, ON5AU, has recently revised his website:  http://on5au.be

This site is a gold mine of information related to antenna modeling and

radio propagation.  Much of it free, the remainder very low cost.  A few

examples:

* Just so you'll know who he is:  http://on5au.be/biography.html

* Review by L.B. Cebik (SK) of Marcel's propagation articles:

* His page devoted to grayline:  http://on5au.be/Grayzone.html

* Complete set of W4RNL (SK) articles:

* Several animation "wizards" in the form of downloadable, self-contained,

exe mini-programs to show gif animations.  For instance:

Yes!  For the first time, the 2019 St. Patrick's Day Contest will be open to all.  Membership is not required and the exchange does not include a member number as in previous years.  I don't know why or how it missed WA7BNM's list.

PS - I should have added that since Jan 1, 2019 ALL 070 Contests are open.  Membership is not required.

Ah, that makes sense: All the Apple devices will assume a HTTPS connection if you don't specify it. Now that I've specifically requested http://... I am getting to the site again. This is however a new problem: It worked without a problem the last time I accessed the site a few days ago.

Thanks for looking into it.

There are some dorked up DNS records in regards to that one right now. I'm trying to sort it out, but really have no idea when I'll get it sorted out as it's pretty convoluted.

Thanks again for letting me know about it.

Historical APE Updates: Action Needed

W7RIV

Everyone, I just wanted to take a moment and reach out. We have been working hard to get the emails sifted through, and the site updated to post the past information that was submitted.

I created a spreadsheet so you reference. There is quite a bit to be updated on the web page, but I wanted to create an outline and get your input.

I'm trying to update from 2015 through 2018, and then start posting information for 2019 APEs. I would really like to see a lot of APEs this year. I know I was not able to do it last year, but I plan on doing it this year for sure. Please do the same.

Please update this spreadsheet with necessary information. If it is incorrect, missing, or you can add some information please do so with this link. ( link ) Please Update Me!

If you have a log, or a Tall Tale with pictures (or no pictures) send it again and lets make sure we get your activity updated. You can email me at ape@...

If you have any complaints or grumbles please let me know as well. I know it may be a pain to send over the information again, but that is all we can do at this point and try harder moving forward.

Thanks,
Bryon, W7RIV
APE Coordinator
