Peter,

My computer locked up and I had to restart DM780 – I watched for a while to see if you would call me again, but I didn’t see you, so I moved on to the Japan Station. Hope to get you again. Sorry about that!

KC3EF March Trip

Our March trip is from FL along the Gulf coast down to Brownsville, TX, the back up to Austin, TX, and then back to FL.  If anyone would like the Google map send me a e-mail off list to kc3ef at arrl.net and I will send it.  If there are any grids that are needed along the route let me know.  We can make small detours.

Paul, I will be here for a while, so you’ll have a chance to get me on 40 meters. And anyone else that needs a YL on 40 meters! Come one, come all! I will be on this evening if at all possible!

Paula’s got a great signal on 20m into the PNW USA.  And yes, Suke JM7OLW is booming in here as well, down low.  Suke has been appearing pretty consistently every afternoon.  Always great to connect with hiim!

I’m sad I won’t be home to try 40m tonite, I think that would get my 88 Tri-Band endorsement.

Worked Paula easily from central Florida on 20m.  Strong signal, but I did have some local QRM that got in the way.  She had the dipole leaning against the house - and up only about 15 ft!  But it worked!  She is planning to be on 40m this evening.  Look for her and give her a call!

Just worked Paula and a good signal into FL.  The hamstick dipole seems to be working well on 20mtrs.

Paula es ham stick dipoles

John Kirby

Paula,

You will not regret ham stick dipoles, vertical or horizontal
Vertical, omni directional and lower takeoff angle
Horizontal, side lobe null for couple dB signal advantage front and back

IF time allows before your trip you will not regret, a giant ferrite toroid and a couple BNC to binding post adaptors (see attached image configuration). Common mode magic, helps keep RF on antenna and off coax & key

Side note, my highschool granddaughter KC3EGN set (and holds) our club PSK-31 record ARRL FD couple years back with hamstick dipoles :>))

Amazing how ancillary kit is larger/heavier than XCVR

Enjoy your trip !!!

Wait a sec....  Brian, you say you're waiting on a 2017 certificate, and there was a "thanks for getting them out this year" comment.  Did anybody receive certificates for 2017?

Y'all give me some feedback, please - if you were Top Dawg or placed in a 2017 contest (or more than one) and did not receive the appropriate certificate, please let me know.

I *thought* I had already sent them out. If not, I need to do that!

Thanks, y'all.

Re: Seeking antenna suggestions

Hi Paula,

Looks like your setup is what I have been using for my portable ops.  Have just used it on 20 mtrs since I only have one 40 mtr hamstick.  Has worked fairly well, but I have has some cases where I either could not use it do to the configuration of the timeshare we were staying in or a couple of them had nice porches, but with metal screens that could not be removed which acted like a big Faraday cage.  I am looking at one of the magnetic loop antenna since they are small and don't need much height.  Let us know how your portable operation works out.
