Re: 2m & 70cm Repeater question...

This is what I see about your radio:

- 42 CTCSS frequencies

- 104 DCS (Digital Code Squelch) codes
- Cross-tone

The first two are pretty well what Paul said. The 3rd one is probably where it's capable of transmitting one tone but listening for a different tone on the same channel.

Hope that helps!

Hey, Bryon - there is no difference. CTCSS is the technical name for it.

"PL Tone" was Motorola's trademark for "Private Line Tone", but it's all the same.

There are local repeaters here in Salt Lake City, and I think people use them interchangeably. The Frequency coordinator calls out at CTCSS, but I think I've programmed my radio when it shows the "Tone"...I cannot remember if I've programmed it when it shows "CT"

Re: 2m & 70cm Repeater question...

There are two common systems of coding to control squelch: CTCSS “Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System” (also called PL by some manufacturers) and DCS “Digital Coded Squelch”.  On a fair number of VHF/UHF radios, there’s a button labeled ‘tone’ which cycles the transmitter through CTCSS, DCS, and nothing.

To say that the terminology surrounding all of this is opaque and confusing would be a massive understatement.

The wikipedia articles for CTCSS and DCS actually do a decent job of shedding some light on all this mess.

TVM to you and the honorable pilot that endures our idiosyncracies.
I really appreciate you acknowledging or almost QSO.
Enjoy the rest as I know a lot of eager folks await your next venture on the road.
Depending where on the coast you park there might be some demand for contacts.
These would have to be with a Starbucks in the very early AM so as not to be noticed.
Thanks for the effort you both make
Barry

KC3EF 10/05/18 Report

Richard Rohrer

The radio gods certainly were not very favorable to my efforts.  Several traces would be there then just disappear.  Did have a couple of QSOs that lasted until we both signed, but some just disappeared.  From DN10 worked AF5BG, N7WE, KB5FOG, N6PCD, WA2TWA, and K9HW From DN11 worked N4GBK, N2SG, N7WE, VA7GEM, KZ9V, and N9JME.  From DN01 only worked KE0JBT.  From DN02 worked N4GBK, N7WE, and AJ4VA.

Tried really hard to work W3HF and VA7GEM, but the propagation did not seem to favor them.  We are staying in Klamath Falls, OR for the next week.  If we are going to any interesting grids while here, I will post on this site.

Thanks to all how worked me on the trip out West.

We are in Klamath Falls for the week and then a week on the OR coast.  Then on to Seattle for a few days.  Then heading back to FL.

Just caught a bit of Dick's CQ - his call and that he is now in DN02.  Didn't answer my reply call and has now dropped off my waterfall.  Hope prop will open and I can work him while he is still in DN02.

Managed to work Dick in DN01 about 1903 UTC very close to 14.072.000.  Rough copy on my end but enough for the Q.  He said I was better on his end this time, then sent that he lost me on our next exchange.  Said they were going to take a short break and would be back...haven't copied him yet.
