Re: Proposed Shutdown of NIST's WWV and WWVH Radio Stations

David M (AJ4TF)

My read of the proposed budget from NIST's web site includes shutting down WWVB... It is included in "radio stations in Colorado".

Re: Proposed Shutdown of NIST's WWV and WWVH Radio Stations

Ray Clements

Initially, I thought that the signal that regulates all of the "atomic" clocks in  my house would be affected. Then I learned that that was station WWVB located at the same site as WWV. However, there are no plans to turn off WWVB.

I have tuned to WWV a few times to check to see that my HF receiver frequency is calibrated correctly, but that is not a routine occurrence. I can certainly live without it.

If all 172,000 ARRL members were to contribute $36.62 each year, we could cover the $6.3M cost of keeping WWV and WWVH on the air. However, few hams would be willing to do so. Many already balk at paying the $49 ARRL annual dues. If hams wouldn't pay to keep these stations on the air, why should non-hams who get nothing from this service at all be forced to pay for it through taxes.

David is exactly right. And quite frankly, the utility of WWV and WWVH is extremely limited at this point in time. There are numerous other sources for standard time and propagation data.

As a guy who has been a ham for over 43 years, I’ll certainly miss the sound of WWV on the air, but I’m not sure that the utility of those stations is worth $6.3M in taxpayer funding.

Those petitions will have no effect. Your time is better spent writing to your Congressional delegation. Congress ultimately controls appropriations.

Two petitions have been started on the White House's "We the People" petition site calling for restoration of funding for these two essential radio stations.
Each needs at least 100,000 electronic signatures by mid-September to generate a response from the White House.

The petitions can be found at:

The W5 bureau lets you send Paypal money, and he will then create the SASE's and send to sorter.  Easiest way to do it.

When I worked at Bureau, I encountered many envelopes which were mark in fashion mentioned above.  Most Bureau dispatchers are conscientious in doing their jobs.

6 envelopes usually get me through a year or more.

Received 31 cards today from ARRL Bureau.  Most were from Germany, but did get one from Belgium and 1 from Uganda.  Pretty much everything was PSK from 2012-13.

Sometimes the Bureau system requires patience.

Just thought I’d post a heads up as to why you should always keep envelopes on file with your local bureau.

P.S.  Local club had auction of donated equipment Tuesday night and I picked up a Dentron MLA-3000A tuner .. oldie but a goodie.  Bid $65 and walked away with it.  A few others walked away with older xcvrs (TR7, Atlas, Dentron Kilowatt amp, and others at dirt cheap prices).

Same problem here, plus all I had was my QRP rig with me at the RV.   I even tried looking for traffic on 20 and 40, and even FT8 was iffy, thanks to the wonderful conditions from the weekend!

Sorry I didn't get to play in this one.
I tuned in out here in central AZ. The noise was horrible.
I guess there were major storms between me and out east.
I was getting about 30% copy of what I could and no 6's or 7's when I listened in.
After sun up Sunday morning, it was nice and quiet.
I agree as someone said, move this sprint to January or December or at least 40 or 20 Meters.
I hope the next event is prosperous.
