KC9UR Pontoon Portable APE

Bob KC9UR <v32hoosier@...>

Hi All - The sixth annual KC9UR Pontoon Portable APE will be conducted on Saturday, August 25th and Sunday, August 26th.  Stan (W9SMR/9) and I plan to set up Saturday morning the 25th, and hope to be on the air by 1pm EST.   We will be operating two rigs on the 80m - 10m bands (each rig on a separate band), propagation permitting.  We plan to operate Saturday afternoon and evening as well as Sunday morning and early afternoon, We will keep the group informed via this forum.  Like last year, as a concession to our advancing years, our shack will be on the front porch of Stan's cottage, not on the actual boat.  The front porch looks out over Round Lake and the Pontoon boat (it's a beautiful sight).  As in past years we will be offering a nice paper QSL (just send us your QSL and SASE), and a really nice certificate for the APE Hunters who work us on 3 bands.  Obtaining an APE Hunter's Certificate will be a bit more challenging this year because of the shorter operating time and propagation conditions, but I know many of you are up for the task!  We really enjoy working so many of you and look forward to reconnecting with you then!

Bob, KC9UR, and Stan, W9SMR/9

Rick

I'm back home now.  Not much was on 40, only heard a few stations   The KX2 began heating up to the point of shutting down even at 4-5 watts out.  Now I have the excuse I need for a new 100-watt rig, maybe something along the lines of a FT-891 or Icom 7100!  I'm planning on going to a different place a little closer to home, hope to see you then.

Hi all.

it is now 1906Z, I put my wire up so now will attempt 40 meters 7.071.   I'm getting hammered on 20 by other stations and modes. Bear in mind I'm QRP !    I'll stay here 2 more hours before packing up and heading home.   Well just as I typed that a WinLink station cranked up on top of me on 40m..

If you have questions or need me to convert and/or post please let me know. I will get all these up on the website soon. We've been working in the background to get this resolved and posted to the website.

Understandable that tech does not always cooperate.
In the meantime maybe we can encourage posting of pertinent data.

Thanks Buddy! That was a huge effort, thanks for trying. We'll look again today. I won't be on the air, but let us know when you are on if you can.

If you have any other questions feel free to give me a call.

Hi all,

My first attempt at an APE activation did not go very well.  I only
tried 20 meters, and I heard a lot of activity... but they couldn't hear
me!  Running QRP level of 5 watts wasn't productive as I only was able
to make 2 contacts for about 4-5 hours of calling.   I had a ton of QRM
from other stations and then some Olivia stations cranked up.   I'll try
again tomorrow from same location, hope to get on the air from noon to
around 4pm.  Next week I'll be operating from a location closer to home
but still QRP as only rig I have presently is a KX2.

Hi Bryon,

Yea, website maintenance is TIME CONSUMING !!!!  I have my own web site where I sell my artwork and it can be a pain.

You can go ahead and post the following schedule

Activation Date: 8/15
            17:00 Z; 20 Meters PSK31
            18:00 Z, 40 Meters PSK31
            19:00 Z, 15 Meters PSK31

I will be on more (days/times), if anyone is interested, watch the Parks on the Air Website Spotting page POTA Spotting.  I will spot myself when I go active.

BTW, good job on the website.  Remember you are a VOLUNTEER :-)

Dale,

Hello sir. I've not done a good job updating the website this year. I'm going to do that this week. I've been sending out posts to the group about who has had events. Sorry you missed those. You can post to the group, or you can email me and I'll post to the group. Once you know we will want to send it out so that we can help drive you some activity. I can also add yours to the website with the others.

Thanks,

Hey, Dale!

I'm not worried about the two week window. That exists so that we can give you plenty of advertising time.

Do pass along the days, at least, please. Past that, just feel free to post to the groups.io email reflector.

Speaking of, I see that you're a member of that group, but that you're set to only receive "special" messages. That's eliminating you from the fun! :-)

Seriously, consider being a regular subscriber so that you'll get the other APE notifications and such. Here's the link to the group: https://groups.io/g/070Club

Good luck with your APE event!

I know I am outside the 2 week window, however, my wife and I have decided to go camping in the Natahala National Forest next week.

I did not see a page for any 2018 activites, but would be interested in doing one.

I can do 15/20/40 M with my portable setup.

Do you need specific day and time, or can I post somewhere?

Let me know

Monitored 10.135 from 0100 to 0200.  No PSK signals detected.  Lots of other digital stations on the waterfall using different modes.  It is about 600 miles, should have been able to work you?
