Re: Skills

Knowing how to build an antenna or solder a coax connector does not make you a good operator any more than knowing how to change the oil and spark plugs in your car makes you a good driver.

Part of being a good driver is being considerate of others who share the road, even if they drive a different vehicle than yours. Likewise, being a good radio operator means being considerate of others who share the airwaves, even if they chose to use another mode. Those who believe they are right and everyone else is wrong should not be behind the wheel of a vehicle, or behind the controls of a radio; they ruin things for everyone.

Many of today's problem are related to quality of operators. Just because someone passes a test doesn't necessarily make him/her an operator.  Being able to build an antenna, solder plugs on coax connectors is a *skill* that one acquires over time.

The ability to send/receive CW is another *skill* that one must hone.  There are many hams out there who are trying to learn CW and some will struggle with it, but if persistent , they will get there. It's learning a new language and it can be tough for some and a snap for others.

There are also people who are partially handicapped physically who for one reason or another are stuck to a keyboard.  Had a friend years ago who was an old CW OP; Charlie was sending at 50 wpm, but he had a stroke and was relegated to a keyboard at 35 wpm... which, for him, was incredibly slow. Charlie had a *skill* which was hampered by a handicap.

Newbies to ham radio are handicapped by shear lack of knowledge.  In time, they may change that. The problem as I swee it is that testing for licenses has been relegated to "memorizing" for the test(s) and not actual learning of the subjects. In some ways I regret not having the CW tests any longer.

Have met lots of new people to ham radio over the years and most have turned into good operators. Guess what I trying to say is to cut the "new guys" some slack.

Remember, EVERY time you submit your log to the endorsement checker, you should submit your COMPLETE PSK-31 LOG, not an "update" or "since the last run" log.

To reiterate - when submitting your log to the endorsement checker, SUBMIT YOUR ENTIRE PSK-31 LOG!

Well put, Jerry. We were all new once!

I don't think the CW tests made a license holder into a "good operator", they just had an extra skill/language available.

When I've taught licensing classes, we worked VERY hard at explaining and comprehending the material in the room rather than just spitting it out and regurgitating (another two dollar word! :-> ) it.

All of us should strive to learn something new every day - keeps us sharp!

Randy - I use an "overflow page" (available here: http://hamclubs.info/070-app/certs/) and just mount them top to bottom.  It's actually time for a second overflow sheet!

I refrained from putting them on membership certificate itself, but many, many members have done exactly that.

The GRIDS stickers go on the GRIDS certificate and the WTW stickers go on the WTW certificate.  These are also available at the above link.

Hope that helps!

I think the point is that many (but not all) of the 070 members don't use FT8. But that doesn't negate Brian's observation that there are many FT8 signals on 30m (and other bands) when it's hard to find a PSK signal.

The original question was where are the PSK operators? Putting our heads in the sand and looking for excuses (like propagation conditions or work schedules or whatever) and denying that many PSK ops (and prospective PSK ops) are using FT8 isn't going to get us anywhere.

We need to find ways to encourage PSK operation, with things that FT8 can't do. Ignoring the elephant in the room won't work.

Yes you can

Iron wont still hot but you can put the plug on

There is a lot of newbie around here that use echo link  to talk on local repeaters in town

Guess so they can talk on repeater and use face book at same time

Put a coax connector on a cable

Listen to local repeater all the time makes me laugh (sounds like CB 20 years or so ago)

They talked about setting up a two meter station for field day  (guessing a OP with HT  standing in a field)
