Serial numbers in contests

N3DQU@...

Wow, seems like Duncan has some pretty strong opinions on this particular
subject. Personally, I don't see that sending a serial number in a contest
exchange is all that much of a hassle. So you gotta keep a running tab of
your last used number, not a biggie in my book. Of course, I am not what you
would call a world-class contester, but still I think everyone would agree
that the contest sponsor has the right to make the rules for his event as he
sees it. If that keeps some ops out of the contest, well that is the way
things go. You can't make everybody happy. To me tho, it only makes the hobby
more interesting. What is it they say...variety is the spice of life...73 de

John van Eijndt KC0DEB

Hi Erika,

Thank you for your help, I will try MixW out, aswell as W1SQLPSK.
I will see you in the test! 73 es GL to all. John kc0deb

Hi Jan,

try the MixW, available for testing at

http://www.nvbb.net/~jaffejim/mixwpage.htm

You can run it in the contest mode, setting up all the features you need,
including the progressive number.
I can only recommend that software.
See you in the contest !

Jay -

I looked through all the functions in DigiPan and couldn't figure out any
way to automate the serial number process. (This was in response to Duncan's
comments a few weeks ago.)

I personally am going to do it on paper this time. I wonder, though, if Skip
is planning any more updates to DigiPan. Perhaps this is something that
could/should be forwarded to him, specifically:

1. either internal functions that allow for incrementing a variable
2. function calls external to the program, that might run a batch file or
something similar that would do the incrementing.

The latter might also be usable to tie in to a CD callbook, for some other
functions.

I guess it all depends on whether Skip considers DigiPan "done", or whether
it is still an evolving product.

As for giving all QSOs #001, I think that might not be consistent with the
reporting requirements of the contest. Ismail wants to see actual logs, not
summaries. Quoting from the rules, "Use seperate log sheets for each band.
Logs must show: band, date, time (UTC), callsign, message, points and
multiplier." Although it doesn't say what serial number YOU sent (I'm
interpreting "message" to be the exchange you receive from the other op), I
would expect that there might be a "counter" on each page, i.e., a line
number for the entry. And that would look awful funny if they were all 001s.

BTW, I just thought about multi-op entrants, who would presumably be working
separate bands. The only practical implementation I can think of is for each
operator to be running his own set of serial numbers, e.g., one set for each
band. I can't imagine their sharing a single list. This would then tie in
nicely with the "separate log sheet for each band" requirement. Maybe this
is another reason to try to discourage their use in future contests.

Hi All,
I REALLY want to work the Anatolian test this weekend. I tried W1SQLPSK
(looks like a great program) but my shack PC won't run high res modes
required for it, so I'm stuck with DigiPan. As for the paper log just to
keep track of the serial number, seems like that's gonna be one BIG hassle.

Don't know what to do. Maybe give all QSO's ser # 001. Just a thought.

Hi Jay,

Why not download the demo copy of mixw .... it is fully functional for 15
days and will auto increment the serial numbers and get you through the
contest period.

W1SQLPSK has a progressive counter and you can send the value with a macro switch. However, I thought the serial number requirement was dropped from the contest or maybe I am confusing contests.

The software can be downloaded at www.faria.net/w1sql or www.w1sql.com

Subject: [070] Serial # & PSK Software

Hi All,

I am wondering, is there such thing as a PSK31 program, with the progressive
serial # built in ? Like, I use Digipan, which works FB for me, but now with
the Test coming up, it looks like more of a hassle to keep track of the
serial #.  I am going to keep a paper log now, but it would be nice to have
that built within the software.
Is there such software available?   Hope to work you in the Test tomorrow.

Congrats to the World Team!

N3DQU@...

Yes yes! Congrats to the World Team for their outstanding performance in
the Fall Classic! W3HF did a nice job laying a smokescreen to keep the rest
of us off-balance with his 11th hour entry. Now we know what to expect next
time hi! Jay N3DQU.

Congratulations "World Team"

ny2u@...

Greetings:

I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate the members of "World Team" lead by their head Gaffer - Steve, W3HF, in the recent TARA PSK Rumble - "The Fall Classic." This "World Team" was composed of the following top notch operators:  W3HF - Steve; TI2/AK0A - Bill; KG6EXF - Bill; ZL3JY - Duncan and OK1VSL - Ludek. Again, on behalf of TARA and "Red Fred et el" we salute you!

This was one hell of a Rumble and the competition was outstanding! I personally believe that the changes Ernie Mills, WM2U, made to this event have proven to be an instant success. We've received many of kind words by those that participated and we thank you folks too. If I know my friend Ernie he already has plans in his mind for the next Rumble, so keep a watchful eye out for the next announcement coming real soon!

For all of you that signed up to the TARA PSK News Group during this Rumble and joined in on the spirited banter between the teams, I thank you folks. I think this was probably the most fun I've had in years, in ANY contest/sprint. Plus, I think we all got to know one another a lot better.

We're very fortunate to have had the amount of support that we received World-Wide in getting the word out. However, I think nobody worked any harder at helping us than our fine friends from the "PODXS 070 CLUB."  This organization has been right there to support us whenever they were called upon and I hope that TARA can someday return the favor. I personally think with two organizations such as TARA & PODXS 070 Club, along with their memberships they have contributed greatly to advancement of PSK ....World-Wide!

This Rumble was more than just about the "Team Challenge" and we owe a great deal of appreciation for everyone that joined us on this weekend. All of you made it the most exciting PSK Rumble to date. And we have the numbers to prove that PSK contesting is on the increase, thanks in part to ALL of you PSK'ers. Can you just imagine what the "Spring Wake-Up" will be like!

The last person I'd like to thank is Ernie Mills, WM2U. I've said on here repeatedly that this guy is a workaholic and I mean it! Ernie has contributed an enormous amount of his personal time towards his fellow PSK'ers and towards TARA's efforts of putting on a good Rumble. I think he's given 110% and he deserves "ALL" the credit for these Rumbles sponsored by TARA! Please take a few minutes and drop Ernie a quick note and let him know how you appreciate his efforts.

Thank You!
"Mr.Bill" NY2U

Anatolian ATA PSK31 Contest

N3DQU@...

Just a reminder that our friends in Turkey, the Anatolian Radio Amateurs
Association (ANARAD) are sponsoring the Anatolian PSK31 Contest to be held
next weekend, 10 November 2001. For information on the rules check out the
website at < http://www.qsl.net/ta7j/psktest/ > . The 070 Club is offering a
very nice Attaboy for operating this event. For more info on how to get the
Anatolian ATA Attaboy check out the 070 Club endorsements page at <
http://hometown.aol.com/n3dqu/podxs070.htm >...73 de Jay N3DQU.

Mysteries of the 070 Club explained!

N3DQU@...

Every so often we hear from an 070 Club member who wonders why he got his
certificate in the mail but not his endorsements, or visa versa. For those
relatively new to the 070 Club and those members who have often wondered but
were afraid to ask, here is a brief description of the 070 Club organization
and what happens with your applications.

The 070 Club is a PSK awards program sponsored by the Penn-Ohio DX
Society, a very small (only 4 members!) HF-oriented club located in western
Pennsylvania and more commonly known by its initials PODXS (pronounced
PO-DIX), not to be confused with the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin, a very fine
weekly DX newsletter published by Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW.

The 070 Club itself is run by two guys, both named Jay. For convenience
sake and to avoid any confusion, they will be referred to by their callsigns
KA3X and N3DQU.

KA3X is the manager of the 070 Club and holds certificate #001. He is the
Top Banana and takes care of the new members, issues 070 Club member numbers,

member certificates, Ragchewers certificates and QSO upgrade spots (e.g. 50,
100, 150, etc). KA3X's email address is < JHudak3rd@aol.com >.

N3DQU takes care of the 070 Club website and all of the information placed

therein. He also takes care of the 070 Club reflector, issues the
endorsements (e.g. Aloha, Lower 48, Hot Dog!, etc.) and often spends his off
hours thinking up new ones just to keep you guys busy! N3DQU is also the
contest manager and takes care of such things as the Three-Day Weekend (TDW),

which just took place in June and was a big success! N3DQU's email address is

< n3dqu@aol.com >.

If they are lucky, KA3X and N3DQU may see each other once a month. There
is no central database and no meetings to conduct 070 Club business. Almost
all correspondence regarding the 070 Club is passed between the two via the
internet, and each mails out the respective items that they are responsible
for to the members. For example, if a member puts in for an upgrade to the
300 QSO level and also applies for an Aloha endorsement, then the 300 spot
will be mailed out by KA3X and the Aloha endorsement will be mailed out by
N3DQU.

For best results, please send your applications and requests to the person

responsible for that particular item. If you send a QSO upgrade to N3DQU for
example, your request has to be forwarded to KA3X and may result in a delay.
By the same token, if you send an endorsement request to KA3X, then he must
forward the information to N3DQU, once again possibly resulting in a delay.

So you can see that it is quite possible to receive your upgrades,
certificates, and endorsements all at different times, even though you had
applied for them at the same time. The TARA Spring Wakeup and the TDW also
slowed throughput down quite abit this past two months, but the backlog has
been cleared up and everything is now back on track.

The 070 Club is free and open to all amateurs licensed to operate on the
HF bands. Operation of this awards program is made possible thru the support
of PODXS and contributions made by 070 Club members. Many thanks to all the
070 Members for your participation and enthusiasm! 73 de Jay N3DQU.
