Re: A/C Replacement Advice Pls! #acreplacement

Thjanks for the quick responses and the advice guys.  Greatly appreciated.  Here's what I know so far:
1) Our 16 year old unit is a Lennox that uses R-22 refrigerant.  R-22 will no longer be manufactured or sold after 2020 (Thank you government!)  So even if I repair and recharge the current one, it can't be repaired after 2020. - New unit is only reasonable answer.
2) The contract will definitely have a "no RFI" clause added.
3) Rheem and Goodman get good internet reviews.
4) From what I read on the internet, the RFI problems come mostly from the "variable speed" models.  They are supposedly the best for comfort, but 2 stage compressor models and single stage compressor models are still made.  So I think we are looking at an old style single stage compressor, and do not replace the constant speed air handler motor please!  Our old unit made no RFI from the compressor, the control unit, nor the air handler.  More later.  Again many many tnz

Some call areas ran out of the KN/WN pre-fixes before other call areas. I vaguely remember an article in QST/73/Ham Radio/CQ about it. Sometime in the '70s.

When did the WN stop being issued? I got my novice sometime around 1973 or 74. My call was WA4QZP. I could never find my original ticket....buried in 40 years of stuff at Mom and Dad”s place. I was told all those old records were lost at the FCC.

I started out as WN8AGD, then became WD8AGD when I upgraded to Technician. When I got my Extra in 1980 (I was a H.S. senior), I became KG8L. I kept that call until we built the house here in Georgia; figured I was gonna stay here – I ought to get a ‘4’ call!

I checked the other day, and WD8AGD has not been reissued. KG8L has been reissued twice.

It's good to see them back on the air. My club call , K9ATI, was originally that of a high school buddy Skip Dewell, KN9ATI, and later K9ATI. Searched for him, but no sign anywhere. Anyhow, I you work a KN call outside of 4-land, you might ask if that was operators original call.

What's next ? Reissueing W, WB, WA, WD ,K and back to N calls ???

Yup, WR was for repeaters. WR2ABZ was our club's.

The rule on moving changed in 1978. That was just before I moved from NJ to CA, and it enabled me to keep my WA2FKS call until I traded it in for a 1x2 in 2000.

I was a WD9 as a Novice and also as a Tech;  upgraded to general in 1979  and received present call.

I also remember there were some WR calls issued back then and think they were for repeaters. I remember WC calls; they should have been issuued to rest room attendants.
Also remember there was a bit of confusion with the KA's being issued back in those days; seems that KA2's were assigned to Ryukyu Islands ( Okinawa) U.S. military personnel and the problem arose when they were also issued to some in NY/NJ. As soon as Ryukyu Is. was deleted from DXCC list everything was okay.  Had a ham in this area who presented his Okinawa license at IL  DMV to get strange call sign on his plates.

Don't recall when the rule changed, but there was a time if you moved out of your district , you had to obtain a call that matched the district you were in.  Another FCC screw up.  Used to be when you heard a W1 call he was in VT, ME, NH, CT, RI or MA and you'd know where to point your beam.  Now everyone is every where !
