It was an interesting comment I found on FB and just thought I'd pass it along FWIW.   Just had a QSO on 2m this morning with a good friend and the subject of FT-8 came up.  He's made a bunch of contacts  and says it's okay if you just want to log a lot of contacts.  He also mentioned it might be the beginning of the end of Amateur Radio once they eliminate the Operator ... just computers talking to computers.   Interesting view point ...

Interesting.  I ran a lot of FT8 over the Thanksgiving holiday (because I could do it 'Armchair Portable' via Teamviewer and still be actively engaged with the rest of the family) and did not encounter that.  Honestly, I don't know how you COULD be crude/rude on FT8 since there is zero human interaction.

I suppose you could still plop down on an ongoing exchange and muck things up a bit, but anyone going to that much effort is probably a lid regardless of mode.

I'm certainly not going to convert to FT8 full tim e, but it was a good way to occupy some time this weekend - and I DID work South Africa on 17 meters using only 40 watts.

It's back with us  here this morning.  Guess the op didn't get back from Turkey Day vacation yet.  Hope he eventually find his rig has been transmitting dead carrier for a week or more !   Must have a good rig because he hasn't fried the finals yet. At least he didn't leave it on "auto CQ" because that would have been annoying.

Jerry,

My PO box is in a tiny small town rural post office.  It is open 24/7 so far.  That’s good for me as I check it a couple of times a week whenever I’m in the area.

My brother in Raleigh has a PO Box in the city that is locked up at night and at times on the weekend.  They were having problems with homeless sleeping in there overnight, leaving a mess and harassing the PO box customers.

Times are a changing for whatever it is the USPS does.  I shop for a lot of stuff on Amazon Prime.  I’m getting home package delivery here in the middle of the swamp on Sundays by the USPS.  I think the USPS is trying hard to improve service and efficiency but that takes time and a commitment by the postal workers nationwide.  I remember using a 5 cent stamp on a letter that took a week or longer to deliver but I think 54 cents for a first class letter that arrives in a day or two is a reasonable cost in today’s economy.

Y’all have a good week.

73,

Bill N4GBK

They lock my P.O. up at 4 PM Saturday  and don't open until 8:30 AM Monday . USPS is getting finickier with increased postage  going up 5 cents in 2018  to  54 cents for 1 st class.  Mailed a package on Saturday and they wanted to charge an extra  $10 to mark it fragile !    No wonder they're  $2.7 MIL  in the hole !

I think the Yahoo buyout is still languishing in legal battles, but their service has definitely gone downhill for some reason.

The GROUPS.IO switch is indeed supposed to be pretty painless, and it's one that I'm seriously thinking about.  An advantage to them is that you only have to have an email address, no crazy Yahoo login-type thing or anything like that.

I'm going to post a "special notice" to the Yahoo Group to garner some feedback on a potential move, I do believe. Might even send an email to all the member for which we have email addresses and go from there. We'll have to see how that turns out.

Does anybody here have any feedback on the idea at this point?

Just a thought. Evidently it is rather painless to migrate over.
