Just slide up next to him a couple kHz, and run RTTY or another obnoxious mode.

Ok… I really try to be patient with people, but there seem to be a higher-than-usual number of wide signals on the band lately… especially 40 meters.  Just had my QSO wiped out by a Cuban station that was about 2 KHz wide – SERIOUSLY – 2 blasted KHz!
This particular station is a frequent offender, but tonight he was extra special.  I’ve QSO’d with him before and told him he was awfully wide, and he’d fix it – to a certain extent – but the next CQ he’d be back to wiping out the waterfall.
Nothing to be done about it, but if I didn’t vent somewhere I might have shot my radio!

Yup, I know him. Told him the same thing, he turns it down,  then the next CQ right back wide.

Stan- Couldn't copy you on 20m with Paula, but did see you on PSK Reporter.  Then saw you work KF5SA on 40m.  I could copy his side, but you were garbled.  Think we are just too close.  You just have the upload and you are DONE!  Congrats!

Paula - I couldn't see you and Stan work on 20, but I did see you work a 6 station.  Fine job with the remote!
That leaves you only one to go!

Yeah… I agree.

The bands have been cruddy anyway, with 20 meters petering out about 2300z for me here in GA. Sometimes there are some stations still visible at 0100, but the QSB is bad by then.

Hang in there.

Too many have switched to that FT-8 thing and also as Fall/Winter WX approaches more people will be indoors . Just worked a guy MO and he was indoors because of rain and cold wx.

Heard a rumor that sunspots may soon be favoring us. Seeing more Europe propagation, but it still spotty here around 1300-1400 UTC. There 's always hope as we come out of bottom on sunspot cycle.

We still listened to shortwave in the field but called it "antenna range evaluation." (also made certain that the door to the commo van was locked)

All the Ham Radio QSLs went through P.O. Box 88 in those days.  I suspect Box 88 was a whole floor or 2 somewhere in KGB HQ and was staffed by dozens of workers. Mrs. Eugenia Stepanova was probably a pseudonym for one of many workers.  In those days the only ones who get ham radio licenses were Party Members in good standing, but all that changed after the Fall of Iron Curtain.

Used to get tons of propaganda from all the Communist countries and the all had lots of pictures of "happy peasants", but not a one had a smile !

Jerry,
Yes I do remember her. (If that was her true name) Maybe she worked for the KGB front office.  I still have some listener requests signed by her and a recording of them answering one of my questions.  It was a real softball that I knew they would want to air.  "With President Nixon in office now how do you view US/Soviet relations?"  They couldn't pass it up.

PO Box 88 probably was the address of the branch of the KGB office that screened all foreign correspondence. There probably was a young eager agent there named Vlad.

Do you remember Mrs. Stepenova at  Box 88  ?  She handled all the QSL card requests. Most of the shortwave stations from those days are shut down now, but it was a fun time for a lot of us.

Wrote  for Newark News Radio Club around 69-73  and quite a few of the SWLs I later met on Amateur Radio. Back then I corresponded (snail mail - pre-email)  with Geoff Watts who was founder of IOTA Program and an SWL.

It all started which a friend and I started listening to an old 1940's Scott floor model radio in his living room in 1950's.   Heard all kinds of short wave stations and I was hooked.

Still have a nice collection of SWL QSLs kicking around here somewhere...

Randy,

LOL.  Reminds me of when a buddy of mine in high school (another SWL) waited by the mail drop box, in the snow, for the mailman to sort through everything to get at our QSL cards before he even had a chance to deliver mail to anyone else in the neighborhood.  We were looking for anything with red and blue borders which usually signified something international.
Those were the days of SWL QSL's arriving from shortwave stations and all of us were in a perpetual "can you top this" contest.  Lots of fun for sure.

Uh oh, Randy/W4RTT - are you expecting a certificate?  I don't see any entries in the contest scorer for you, at least not using David's little lookup tool.  You do have some stickers headed your way in the next little while, though!

Be good, y'all!

Jerry,
Yes I do remember her.

Great story !    They might have overlooked you because you were in military and figured you weren't a threat.

Jerry,

That's funny because I got my share of Russian, Chinese and Cuban propaganda during those days but it didn't prevent me from getting a top secret clearance to keep a close eye on them when I was stationed in Europe.  LOL.

We were always the first to get our radios set up when we were in the field and on one occasion I got bored and decided to tune the shortwave bands just to see what was up.  I soon came across the news in English from Radio Moscow.  I recognized the accent from years of listening.  An officer just happened to walk by and asked what was on the radio.  I answered that it was the news from Radio Moscow.  Convinced that I was just being a smartass ( I can't imagine why he would think that) he asked again and at that moment we heard the very familiar refrain. "And that was the news from Radio Moscow."  He then said "Get that #%@& off that radio.  "Yes sir."  True story.

I guess the Cold War continues.
