I've hopefully made some improvements to the 160m antenna. I hung 19' of wire vertically off the non-match box end giving me an inverted L configuration - makes total length 72'.  Improved the SWR to the point where the internal tuner will now match it down to 1.1:1. Also stuck a 1:1 unun in the coax where it enters the shack to block common mode RF.  If I'm understanding things right, the feedline is the counterpoise on this kind of setup.

I'll be CQing again at 0000 UTC - 1.807 +/- 1000.  Hopefully prop will be better and this configuration will hear better.  This is a very temporary setup and it will have to come down tomorrow morning.  HOA you know.  If it does OK tonight I'll string it back up next Saturday afternoon for the contest.  Would appre ciate a call and a signal report if you see me tonight!

Thanks,

Thanks Bill. I never thought to check what was happening CW or FT-8. Must be getting old and senile. But I can still remember my call - hi hi. Been thinking about tweaks I could try on the antenna. Might give a few of them a try today if the thunderstorms hold off and then give it a run again this evening. Oh for about 10 acres of land with no HOA restrictions! Not until horses fly I'm afraid.

Thanks to all who looked for me.  I think this antenna set up is deaf, deaf, deaf!  I saw Bill - N4GBK from Hertford NC, but he was in and out with not enough to qualify as a qso.  I did work Charles - KI4VMK with a strong 599 signal....but he is in Chiplley FL only about 260 miles NW of me.  Looks like I have further antenna work to do if I'm going to have any luck in the Great Pumpkin Contest.

Again - thanks to all who responded here on the reflector and everyone who looked for me.

Sort of worked Rick.. His signal went up and down and we made it a QSO but not much more.  Saw both sides of his QSO with KI4VMK.  The band might improve a bit later in the evening but Rick should be able to put a few Qs in the log in the contest.

Happy Radio and 73,

Also, purists might argue with me but I am usually running 70 watts or so on 160.  I have an IMD meter and my signal is good at that power level.  Also, not going to overload many receivers on 1807 as there is usually no one home.  The  2 or 3 dB signal improvement helps on the noisy band.  22 states so far but no west coast yet.  Maybe that will happen in the Great Pumpkin Contest!
