Very true. After 47 years in service end I've found there are times when RTM in necessary . Happened to me the other day at one of my customers. There was a weird message on display and I did everything I knew and went to car for manual... couldn't find a thing about solving problem. In desperation I called manufacturer's tech support which ran me through all the programming and he was stymied too. Finally he said to drop power, both AC & battery. That cleared the problem. It was last thing I would have thought of, but my job is to find a fix quickly and not run up the billable hours. When your stuck on something it's always good to RTFM ... Read The Flaming Manual ! All, Thanks for the input! I think I have all my macro's fixed. I deleted a LOT of them and modified most of the rest. Now, that I have the day off, I sit here and don't see a PSK31 singnal anywhere. I have set my macro's up a couple of different ways... For casual QSO's I usually reply with two of my callsigns: de k For contests I reply with a single return of my call: de k You can always hit the reply macro again if you don't get a reply
from the other station. If calling CQ you might want to send your call sign a few
times.... maybe three times. Gives other stations a bit of time

I have four macros and have used all four. One has calls once, two have calls twice, three has the called station twice and my call three times and the fourth macro is my call only repeated four times for when none of the others have worked. If the calling station cannot figure our my call from all that then the QSO is done. If comm is good then once works fine. Bill AG4QX # 0398

Hi Jon ! When responding to a CQ, I usually do de . He already knows his own call so doing it more than once might be redundant. My own call I will give twice in case he has QSB or doesn't get it the first pass. But this is subject and most do what works for them. When calling CQ , I use auto CQ which is 2 rounds of 3 CQ's and 3 de my call. It also repeats itself every 20=30 seconds so I can be doing other things. I haven't found IMD & S/N reports useful. As long as I can hear the other station I'm happy. Have worked a lot of station where copying signal was so rough I had to resort to picking out bits and pieces to get a full call sign, but a contact was made. My thoughts on IMD & S/N reports is that they are the PSK equivalent of "um" and "er" or the telegraphic version of .-.-.-. , just to fill space, IMHO. Jerry N9AVY #454

35-40 watts is a decent power level out for PSK31. Usually run about 40 watts, but have to watch power out meter as FT-1000MP has a tendency to creep upwards with power for some reason. The difference between 40 & 50 is negligible because I would have to double the power to see any difference at the other end and that would have me running 80 watts and would have to double in again to see another S unit which would mean running 160 watts that isn't there unless I put amp in line. At that power level people would be screaming about QRM, etc. and maybe neighbors would being getting TVI. I'm happy at 40 watts. Jerry n9avy

Hope you weren't running a lot of power. A friend who used to live here in town did that with some power on SSB and ended up with "flaming traps" (might have been a KW). I would recommend erring on side of caution. That was why I went to trapless Force 12 antenna. Traps can be lossy. I know I can load up Force 12 on 12 & 17 m with a tuner, but with the WARC dipole on tower above the Force 12, the WARC dipole works much better without tuner, Performance is better than the Force 12 and I think the Force 12 works backwards on 12/17m, at least that what manual said. Had warning not to use either antenna on 40m and that was why I put up both vertical and a sloper. Have few friends who share info with ne and they're usually right; so I listen. jerry
