Re: Field Day

Hi all,
Out here in Hot and Smokey Land (AZ), 80 Meters was pretty good last night. Much less crowded.
On 40 and 20 Meters it was really crazy out here.  Too many on and was tough on low power (30 Watts).
When you S&P (1D) it was tough getting thru the muck. My patience prefers CW.

15, 10 and 6 were dead out here until Field Day ended.
My 10M PropNET catches went across to the East Coast and on 6 Meters I worked PA, VA, NC, & MA SSB & CW this late afternoon and this evening.
What can I say??

You hit the nail on the head !!!   I believe 40 may be open a lot , but sits unused because everyone thinks it's dead.
40m was utilized  below 7070 down to at least 7069.  The upper end was utilized far above the usual band edge. There was also some activity on 80m during daylight hours.

"It's not a contest"  was blown out of the water when Dave Patton said, "If they give points, it's a contest !"

Yes, I did. The waterfall was full (a "waterfull"? No, I wasn't creative--it was a typo that I started fixing.) much of the day.

Frankly I don't think that propagation changed just because someone in Newington scheduled an "event". (Remember, it's not a contest.) Makes you wonder what might happen if more of us used that band when we didn't think there was anyone to talk to.

Was doing a  lot of S & P  and hunting grids..  only came up with 2 news ones.  Think I also picked up some 070 #s as well.   Really aren't any other upgrades I need to work on.

Do think some were running amps who should have known better.  Worked some PODXS members and mostly avoided the dusty, old 1 x 2 calls that get dragged out once a year and don't QSL !  :-)

Jerry-
I agree...there were a bunch who I'm sure were doing PSK for the first time.  There were a few who weren't even using macros!  And I agree that someone who knows what they are doing needs to set up and then periodically check the operation of the rig.  I endured several who were so wide and running so much power. Had to wonder if maybe they were using amps!  Really!

But 40 and 20 were absolutely full of traces from this QTH.  Never seen so many.  And most of the ops were good.  Good signal and brief exchange and QRZ?  I monitored for about 6 hour total, mostly watching for grids I need.  Only did about 20 QSOs (all S&P) but did managed to log QSOs on 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10.  Looked at 6 but never saw a trace.  Didn't have a 160 antenna up.

All and all a fun FD...and my battery lasted without recharging!

Brian:

That's great to hear, but you need a good PSK operator.    Many of the station I heard on PSK this weekend were terrible operators.

Had one op call me Saturday, but I didn't answer him first because there was another station who called first.  Worked him and called CQ  again (I had been running that frequency for over an hour). I thought he'd call again. He showed up on frequency several minutes later and proceeded to call while I was in QSO with a K6 station...  he wiped out the K6 QSO and I lost that.  This culprit was a certain N0 station who was 599 here and he kept calling on same frequency; so I know he heard me.  Either he had a "wooden receiver", bad QRM or he was having a "hissy fit" because I didn't work him when he called me.

Also experienced a few other ops who called me and tried to take over the frequency ... okay, I'll admit that I continued to call CQ and ignored them. .. even ran CQ macro several times back to back.  I lost it !

Also noticed a few of the big gun FD stations running wide signals ... even when I turned off AGC & inserted max attenuation they were still wide.  I would assume that ops were not trained in proper set up of PSK station.

Other than a few instances like these, I had fun although I didn't operate the full 24 hours.

Loren

I casually chase IOTAs and am pleased to pass on a new contact.
The other morning I worked JE6MCA/JD1 on AS-031
I have been trying for this island since about 2007. This is the 2nd time I have heard it on air
and was pleased to log it.
They are out there - just a challenge to find.

Be careful as there are many KH6/AH6 calls  NOT in HI  !  I'm the guy who has to reject all the wrong ones and it pains me to do so !

Just finished up the IOTA endorsements, if any more are submitted before June 30, I will try to get to them.  Just a reminder to all that the bottom of your endorsement checker page contains a list of issues with IOTA data in your submitted log.

Red are rejected entries for various reasons, this could be as simple as a formatting error in the entry, or a invalid IOTA.  IOTA format is always xx-nnn (example NA-026) and must be exact or it will be rejected.

Yellow entries are either issues you need to provide us more info on, or they may be reminders to us to manually process the entry, a good example of this is PJ2MI.  We can't automatically process PJ2MI (among others) because the IOTA designator changed due and the QSO dates have to be handled manually.  There are many others that fit this category, but it is always good to verify the data in your log against this listing.

One other reminder, we do not accept QRZ IOTA data on the details page as valid, there must be other information to verify the IOTA info (QRZ bio page info, RSGB IOTA lookup, country of origin, and other sources we check).

Thanks and good luck with all your endorsements.

Loren - WA3WZR

Chris makes a good point - this is a good time to submit your LOTW and eQSL items as well.

That said, remember that 070 Club awards and endorsements do not require any confirmation (unless specifically requested) outside of your log entry.

Looking forward to starting another "quarter" after the 30 JUNE deadline for this one!
