Re: 6 meters open

By the way, 10 and 6 Meters was open to Europe today.
10 Meter PropNET showed many partial captures from Poland to Spain today.
6 Meters was open to Austria (CW) in Southern Arizona.
Of course I missed the whole thing.
Austria on 6 Meters would have been a catch since 2001 for me (In Texas then).
The season (Es) hasn't peaked yet. Sounds like a fun summer.

Going back to my days as a MW SWL, I recall trying to rotate my loop antenna (4 ft  box loop) on both horizontal and vertical axes.  I succeeded nulling out 50 KW "clear channel"  WGN whose transmitter was 6 miles West of me at that time.  Managed to hear the Cuban station which was also on 720 KHz.  Could hear both sidebands slightly on WGN.

Thanks Jerry for the info.  Loop antennas are neat.

I think my Carolina Windom 160 works well with 50 watts on 160 meter PSK31.  I am not aware of any stations calling me that I am not able to copy.  If I were running 1 kW CW or similar, maybe a better receive antenna might make a difference?  I suspect there are not many PSK31 operators on 160 meters.  I did copy R6AV one winter night on 1838 but was not able to get him as he was working EU stations.

I do have a Wellbrook loop mounted on a 4x4 post with a TV rotator that works great on everything from about 50 kHz up through the HF bands.  I use it some on the MW broadcast bands and it will allow me to null strong stations to pull out weak ones.  It is amazing what you can receive with that small antenna.  LF aircraft beacons all over the eastern US and foreign broadcasts from Africa and Europe around 120 kHz.  However, the loop does not receive any stations on 160 meters that my Windom misses as the signal and noise are both weaker on the loop so the s/n ratio is about the same.  I’m thinking of moving the loop to a different spot in the yard to see if that helps by getting it away from some metal objects.  It’s not too far from a propane tank and a greenhouse.    http://www.loop-antennas.com/

I hope our club members will turn up on 160 this fall and winter in the Great Pumpkin and Triple Play Contests.  Low sunspot numbers should help with Top Band qsos.

Dave,

I am in NC and occasionally try 160 psk31 at 1807.  Have about 20 states and Canada confirmed.  Good for about 500 miles on a good night.  There will be some club activity in contests in fall and winter.  Tstorms here in the southeast make it hard to use until fall.  I have a 160 meter Carolina Windom.  Probably could do better with a separate low noise antenna on receive.

Just wondered if there's been any activity on 160m lately.  I finally have a compromise antenna that will let me attempt to play on that band but as expected the noise floor is quite high.

Hi Stan !

As with any contest ... (yes, if they give points it's a contest) ...  you need  to keep transmissions as short as possible.  FD Ops don't want full macros with everything but your hat size !

I typically use  " 3D  IL  QSL ?"  after a station acknowledges my call  to him.   When calling I use "CQ FD   CQ FD     CQ FD  de  N9AVY  N9AVY K"  Just one CQ is a bit too short as people are tuning around and may not see you...same goes for repeat of my call; might repeat call  3 times if lots of QRM/QSB.

If you want to add "QSL" or "TU"  those are your choices, but may not be necessary. People just want pertinent data so they can move on to next station.

Good luck and see you in FD .. I'll be  One Delta !

P.S.  If you're looking for 070 numbers, the checker picks them up automatically if you don't enter them.

Hi Eric,

You can also us MMVARI with N1MM logging.  When I run RTTY I use MMTTY with N1MM logging.  I found I did not like the way Fldigi handles the macros.  I guess I got use to DM780 years ago and being an old dog I don't like to learn new tricks, hi hi.  I don't like the fact that you have to use HRD with its baggage to interface to the radio, but I have never had any problem with the command to center the trace in the bandwith selected.

Hi Eric,

I had the same problem as you when I changed from DM780 to Fldigi.  It seems to be based on what you are using for rig control.  I could get it to work with Rigcat.  Could never get Flrig to work correctly.  Got everything working and then decided that I like DM780 better and changed back.

Hello All,

I’m trying to teach myself FLdigi after using DM780 for years and a few things have me stumped. I’m trying to get the QSY button to center on about [Frequency]+1500 in the waterfall. That’s where My K3’s 400hz filter centers out at. No matter what I do it jumps to +1000 — about 500z out of my passband. I’ve hit the “Store” button to no avail.

I even resorted to such drastic measures as RTFM. The documentation isn’t very good, IMO. They talk about an “M>” button that I have yet to find.

Any light you guys might be able to shed on this would be appreciated.

TIA,
