Not sure it is your radio Jerry as I saw the same thing, center signal (main) with two side signals. When I went to them it was the same station.

May I recommend a "car portable" setup?  It sure saved my bacon several times last year when we were on the road in the motor home and did side trips to places the motor home couldn't go.

My setup was very simple.  I used MFJ HamTenna Whips (similar to the no longer available Lakeview Hamsticks) and a Hustler MBM 5" mag mount on the roof.  It required a isolation/choke to eliminate RFI inside the car.  I used a Balun Designs Model 1110-QRP.  I got the 20m whip to tune to 1:1.1 at 14.070 but the 40m whip wasn't long enough to get to 7.040.  So I used the internal tuner in the primary rig (K3) and a LDG Z-11 Pro with the backup (FT-897D).

Power was from a 33 amp-hour AGM battery.  It was good for about 6 hours on one charge.  And my Schumacher XC6 642 battery charger from WalMart has the AGM charging protocol and recharged in just a few hours.

I used a microHAM USB III for an interface and a Lenovo Win7 laptop.  The limiting factor on operation was the old laptop battery.  It was only good for about 90 minutes off line.  Should have bought a new one before we hit the road.

I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of this setup when I tested it from home (central Florida) and was able to work from Ontario Canada to Argentina on 25w - both 20m and 40m.  On the road, that level of performance varied by location, but I was always able to make contacts from wherever we were....and some of those were a long way from civilization.  Car portable was new for me and added a whole lot of fun.

Most of the equipment was stuff I already had.  Total outlay for the battery, whips and mag mount was less than $150.  And I had to use this setup from a hotel parking lot over Christmas to finish out the 365+1.  Wouldn't have made it without!

Hi Jerry,

Well, reduce the amplitude of the input to the soundcard and see if the sidebars attenuate.   If so, then strong signals are the culprit.

You may want to consider lowering the input amplitude a bit to avoid this effect.   The software algorithm will give 100% on some amazingly low-level signals.

Bad news is that I have no remote rig control, so I can't switch bands. In fact I have no idea what the radio is really doing.

Good news is that KE6KJD, Bob in Arizona, replied to my CQ so I have my contact for the 16th. Looks like the band is going long now. I also see YV5IAL calling CQ.

Thanks to the group for listening, and for Bob and Adam's replies and attempts to hear me. I should be home early enough on Friday to get a QSO on the 17th, which is my last missing day in February.

Anyone still around? Is 40m open anywhere?

Just got to my hotel room and trying to make a 40m QSO via remote access for my 365 of the day.
