Windows 10 - My Opinion

Fellow 070'rs,

I have several computers of various ages, whether they be towers or laptops, with varied operating systems.

They range from a very old decrepied  Compaq that has DOS as it operating system to my Dell "Man Cave Main Frame".

The Compaq is used to program my Motorola HT's, and I have a few with XP Pro for field day, logging, EZNec antenna design, etc.

My point? Through the courtesy and help of my IT Department, defined as 1 each, Mike, K6MKF, 070-412, just up the road from me a few hundred clicks, I've very painlessly upgraded to Windows 10, from Win 8.1. The upgrade was simple, and was done because I get tired of the pop-ups asking me to do it and felt it was the correct thing to do. All com ports stayed the same, all CAT functions in my RigExpert stayed the same. It all worked as advertised.

As a stock holder of Microsoft since 1995, I'm proud to say that Microsoft finally got something right!

In no way can I advise anyone to do the upgrade, as computers vary greatly from ham shack to ham shack, but it worked flawlessly for me.

As John says,

"Just sayin'",

Milt.

Milt,
I probably fall into the "other" category but we on the East side are broadminded enough to read you loud and clear.  Looking forward to meeting some new callsigns in 2016.  Still working on WTW but I'm starting to see some blue sky on the left side of the tally sheet.

Just barely made the 25 on 25.  Had to work right up to the end.  Lots of QRN here.

HNY to all 070'ers.  See ya.

Download and run Malwarebytes the free version. It might even take couple of passes to fully clean your infected machine. Then make sure your firewall and Ms virus are on and working.

If anyone can help me, please contact me off-list. I am having some browser problems on our computer at our church. It has to do with Mozilla Firefox. I was using Windows 7 and upgraded to Windows 10. Now, I’m getting these off-the-wall external pop-ups and can’t figure out where they are coming from and how to stop them!!!

Thanks

Re: What do you hope to achieve in 2016?

John Etling

Well let me see…

1.  Raise my shorty tower and get my 2m, 440 and 6m beam back in operation.

2.  Work a few more DX countries so I can at least say I am near 200 countries worked (currently at 128).

3.  Install the new 80/160m add-on to my vertical that is supposed to help in antenna efficiency on those bands.

4.  Learn to operate RTTY

5.  Re-Learn CW so I can join in on the CW portion of the band. Basically time to relearn code as has been 12+ years since I even attempted to do code. Learned it to take General test, then promptly dropped it as had no interest in it at the time.

6.  Anything else I may have not mentioned or even become aware of yet.

… I’m just sayin’

After reading something here about WARC bands recently, I hooked up the old WARC dipole (Cushcraft C-3)  and looked on 17m.  Worked KF7VQO for a new one (state) on 17m.

Then went to 30m to see w\if any activity there.  No PSK, but did work a F8 station on RTTY.

Happiness may be on WARC bands...

Lee Farquharson <farquharson_lee@...>

1. I would like to finish WAS with PSK31.  (Does anyone live in Utah?)
2. Get the WARC bands endorsements.
3. Get at least 25 DX stations.

Lee, KD8ZWG

Hey,   some of us  OT's licensed back in the day can't work paddles because we learned on straight keys.... straight key goes up & down while paddles works sideways !   Too much retraining !   :-)

2016 Goals:

1. Work at least 1 psk-31 station/day including Feb. 29th. (365+1)

2. Put up a 40 meter antenna, so I can work on my third leg of 24/7.

3. Get on the air with my new Yaesu I purchased in the 4th Qtr of 2015,
and work toward my 6-meter endorsement.

4. This year, I am going APE again! Hope band condx are better.
Would also like to try NPOTA.

5. Finally, like Paula, I would like to try my hand at CW. Dropped it
over 40 yrs ago     when I upgraded from novice, so I am really sloooow now.
Bought a new straight key for the event, but did not realize how
rusty I really am.

Whew! I'm tired now, tnx fore the idea!

Here's my list.

#1 - This if nothing else!  Work a PSK31 contact on Monday Feb 29, 2016 so I've covered the +1 portion of 24/7, 365, +1.  If I miss this one....well, it will take another 4 years for the opportunity to come around again!

#2 - Activate some of the NPOTA sites using PSK31.  I'll post here on the list when I plan to activate.  Really want to make a PSK31 presence in this ARRL event.

#3 - This it the tough one.  Get an antenna up and make some 160m contacts.  I'm on a small lot with HOA restrictions.  Got to do some thinking on this one!
