However, CW Get has some limitations with weaker signals and noisy band conditions.  There are other CW receive programs out there and you have to find one that works for you.  Many have used it to up the CW skills.

I learned that I could get my amateur radio license without taking a code test, so my interest in amateur radio was renewed after a 50 year hiatus. I passed my Technician and General exams the same day and then passed my Extra about eight months later.

With computer generated code and Iambic keyers, learning code is a lot easier than it was fifty years ago.  I can now send code manually at close to 15 wpm, but I still have trouble decoding it. I might be able to pass the 5 wpm test, but not much more. Thus, if code were still a requirement for a ham license, I would not be on the air. I wish I were proficient enough to make CW contacts, but for now I stick primarily to digital modes. Thank goodness for 070.

Don't forget that to the newer hams code is just another digital mode and possibly not one of the preferred ones. Having never been a CBer I guess I fall into the other category.

Re: Extra Class License granted + CW

ljl2002@att.net

Can't believe that code requirement has been gone that long. I still had to grind out 22wpm and as soon as I did I sat for the test.
This was because of the gentle but firm persuasion of my local Ham club.  Of course I didn't get any sympathy from the ex-Navy guys that could do 35 wpm and carry on a conversation with you at the same time.  Just like the Russians.  They would operate their coastal stations, (anyone remember cw ship to shore traffic?) with blinding speed just to show the Yanks that they could do it.

I remember PO Box 88. I may even have some stuff lying around from "her" here.  "She" was probably a room full of low-paid KGB scrutinizing all the mail that arrived from that Capitalistic Country in the West.  The trick to getting your correspondence answered over the air on "Moscow Mailbag" was to ask about their relations with the West or about their space program.  Worked every time.

ahhh.... Yep.  They were good times.

Thanks for the segue Milt!

That's pretty much what I did back in my Novice/Tech days... except I used Steno pads.  Lots of scribbles in those pages... as time went on I became more accurate in what I wrote down, BUT I didn't happen overnight.  I was work, but fun as well.  Kept at it even though my Elmer would call me after I finished a QSO and asked if I needed a towel - I was sweating bullets and he knew it !  Comments like those kept me going.

I met lots of old time who actually had 1x2 calls which were originally issued to them back in the day.  These guys could probably send a lot faster, but chose to come down to the Novice portions of the bands (yes, Novices were segregated in those days!).  These hams helped many a Novice make a contact and helped increase both their speed and enthusiasm.  Learned a hard lesson to never send faster than I could copy...  if I was at 10-12 WPM and jumped to something closer to 20 wpm the other station would come back at 20 wpm and I'd have to send :"QRS" (please send slower - oh the disgrace !). Lesson learned.

Looking back on ham career, I still think I had more fun as a Novice than any other time.  Everything was new and exciting. It was like exploring the world via radio.
These days I'm finding PSK almost as much fun as my Novice days.

If you're trying to learn code, I applaud you !   Keep at it and you'll be rewarded.  Most of DX seems to be active in those lower 25 kHz. portions of Extra bands.  If your goal is to work DX that is where you'll find it.

Good luck !

Bryon,
Here’s what I did:
I got a spiral notebook...thin...not thick...thick would be discouraging. Then, I sat in front of my radio, and copied code. I wrote what I heard. At 1st there was a lot of blank letters, but eventually I was on top of it. Head copy came later.
When you’re comfortable copying and have filled up a bunch of pages...front and back... then grit your teeth, set your jaw firm, and call cq at whatever speed you’re comfortable and proficient with. A “Gentleman” will answer your cq at your speed. If it isn’t a “Gentleman”, don’t hesitate to ask him/her/it to “QRS”...(Slow down)
CW is fun, and I still enjoy it.

Milt that gets me excited. I have been a ham for about 4 years. With a dedicated antenna for about 2 years. I am now 6 weeks in my focus on learning CW. It has been challenging. But the reward being able to pick out words in code is awesome. I have yet to be able to make a QSO.

It played nicely. Anyway, late at night, I could rotate it due North and work Russian hams for hours. Weak fluttery signals, (phase shift distortion?) and every one of them would send a qsl card! Some even wanted to horse race on cw. I could stick with them for a bit, but eventually, they’d kick my booty and very humbly I’d ask them to qrs...which they did. Regardless of the political climate in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, amateur radio sure bridged the gap. The only thing? You had to qsl with them via Box 88, Moscow.

Agree with the Incentive plan!!!

A lot of data to study and understand is a massive understatement!!! I truly was given 2 weeks aka 14 days to cram from being complete clueless and empty on the data to over-capacity spilling out all over the place, leaking from ears, nose, eyes, hair follicles wherever. I truly was surprised I even passed it as I whined and cried the entire way to the test center that there ain’t no way in $%LL I was close to even being able to pass as was hitting right at 70% average on the plethora of online (via QRZ) tests – 100 plus. Passing only 4 out of all of them.  SO to pass it in “real life” was not only a shocker, but about 85 pounds of weight off the shoulders. What the heck, my buddy paid me my test fee for passing plus too me out for breakfast.. so all in all a good day!

For those who may be interested…
Had a buddy, local to me, “force” me into studying and gave me a 2 week timetable to get it handled, then pushed me, literally, out the door at 0700 this AM to stand and be heard in front of 3 VEs, none of whom I have ever seen, met, previously QSO’d with at or before 0800 this date and prove to them I wanted the top Amateur license class.
After an hour of sweating, worrying, 2nd guessing and “writing” why I felt they should grant my request, they finally granted me my request. So now there shall be no more worrying if I’m in band or if I need someone to be with me when operating etc.
Then the VE’s in return advised me that in turn for them granting my EXTRA request I was to become a VE as well. So because they were nice enough to grant my request, I obligingly granted theirs as well (as if I could have said “Ummm… no thanks”).

I won’t be up all those hours, however, I sure can try to get the 0400 and 0500 Zulu hours for Wednesday. Your local time will be on tuesday since you are in CA I believe. Well, I know I did not give any lead time or notice to anyone but got up and thought I would give it a try. Huh, no go it looks like. Not even a peep. I checked the solar indices and they look pretty terrible. Actually my software I use shows the indices and they did not look good at all. I thought I would check a couple of web pages to compare and they are right on, lousy. So, back to bed for tonight.

Milt — I’m in NC — I should have said I was working on Zulu times for Tuesday … So for tonight I will need Wednesdays Zulu time which are 0400-0800Z. I won’t be up all those hours, however, I sure can try to get the 0400 and 0500 Zulu hours for Wednesday. Your local time will be on tuesday since you are in CA I believe. I’ll shoot for 0400 & 0500Z tonight (that’s be Midnight and 1 AM my local time)

Dan-man,

You want to give it a try again tonight?...If you need anything on Tuesday...

I’ve a meeting to attend tonight, so I’ll be getting home around 10 or so Los Angeles time and can sked with you.

Where are you located?

Well, I know I did not give any lead time or notice to anyone but got up and thought I would give it a try. Huh, no go it looks like. Not even a peep. I checked the solar indices and they look pretty terrible. Actually my software I use shows the indices and they did not look good at all. I thought I would check a couple of web pages to compare and they are right on, lousy. So, back to bed for tonight.

Ok, I did try calling you but I think my Windows VM is going haywire on my MAC for some reason.  It does this every once in  a while so I’m going to try and restart the Windows and see what happens.

Tnx
