Re: Extra Class License granted

Ray Clements

I am also one of the no-code Extras.

I wanted to get my amateur radio license when I was teenager back in the 60's. However, I struggled learning code. I dropped out of Boy Scouts because sending and receiving code at 5 wpm to achieve First Class rank at that time. I had completed all the requirements for the rank other than Morse code. Had I been able to learn code, I might have gone on to be an Eagle scout.

As I approached retirement, I wanted a hobby that would keep me busy. I learned that I could get my amateur radio license without taking a code test, so my interest in amateur radio was renewed after a 50 year hiatus. I passed my Technician and General exams the same day and then passed my Extra about eight months later.

With computer generated code and Iambic keyers, learning code is a lot easier than it was fifty years ago.  I can now send code manually at close to 15 wpm, but I still have trouble decoding it. I might be able to pass the 5 wpm test, but not much more. Thus, if code were still a requirement for a ham license, I would not be on the air. I wish I were proficient enough to make CW contacts, but for now I stick primarily to digital modes. Thank goodness for 070.

Being one of the unwashed no-code extras I am surprised this attitude still prevails in this club.
Don't forget that to the newer hams code is just another digital mode and possibly not one of the preferred ones. Having never been a CBer I guess I fall into the other category.

If you were one when Milt and I was I could not see your trace.  Wish I was up I need both 0600 and 0700Z hours.   I had to get up for a potty call and checked the radio and worked AK9B out of TX for the 0800Z hour.  that’s it for Wednesday. I got the rest of the day all done.

Maybe next time Robert.

I know and the A index is at 19 which doesn’t help either.

Tell, you what, try giving a couple of CQ’s and let me see if I can see your trace?? If not then I’ll call it a night.

I sure do.  I also need 06, 07 and 08 but I won’t be staying up for those hours tonight.  What I’ve been doing is going to bed and usually wake up during those hours and I just come in here and see what’s going on.    I’m not really gung ho on getting this finished any time soon.  I’m just working on it as I can.  I have set Thanksgiving as a goal to complete all the hours except for the Sunday (church) and Wednesday (church) hours.  Those I should get if/when we have snow/ice and they cancel services.

Ok, I did try calling you but I think my Windows VM is going haywire on my MAC for some reason. It does this every once in a while so I’m going to try and restart the Windows and see what happens.

Tnx

Milt — I’m in NC —   I should have said I was working on Zulu times for Tuesday … So for tonight I will need Wednesdays Zulu time which are 0400-0800Z.   I won’t be up all those hours, however, I sure can try to get the 0400 and 0500 Zulu hours for Wednesday.     Your local time will be on tuesday since you are in CA I believe.     I’ll shoot for 0400 & 0500Z tonight   (that’s be Midnight and 1 AM my local time)

You want to give it a try again tonight?...If you need anything on Tuesday...

I’ve a meeting to attend tonight, so I’ll be getting home around 10 or so Los Angeles time and can sked with you.

Where are you located?

Well, I know I did not give any lead time or notice to anyone but got up and thought I would give it a try. Huh, no go it looks like. Not even a peep. I checked the solar indices and they look pretty terrible. Actually my software I use shows the indices and they did not look good at all. I thought I would check a couple of web pages to compare and they are right on, lousy. So, back to bed for tonight.
