Looks like that's about all.

Bet some of those towns roll up the sidewalks after 8 PM !  :-)

Possibly some rare grid activations as well.  If I knew what counties Grids are needed I could start looking into activating them or at least one of them one day and another the next.  Looks like they only had about 128 psk31 Qs in their spring event.  I only have Sep to plan a route.  Not a lot of towns or bright lights on after dark when flying over Nebraska.  I would like to know if there is interest in the Event from the club members?

Hi Robert.

You were thinking about activating some counties in NE on PSK31. There will be a Rare County Activation Special Event on the weekend of 10/3 and 10/4. Not sure if you can participate, but we would be delighted if you could participate. Using your own call is fine. The club will activate NE0QP also for this weekend.

This year we will cover the panhandle and the northern counties really well, but need someone to activate the southern counties especially along the border with Kansas. Hope you could find the time to activate one or more of them that weekend. PSK31 would be a great mode to use.

So more than any particular counties, we are trying to get those counties activated that were not activated in the April NE QSO Party. Most along the KS-NE border were not activated in April, and so any of those would be dynamite or us.

An announcement will appear in the Oct QST and more details can be found at www.qcwa.org/chapter025.htm or on the NE0QP page at QRZ.com.

I find the BEST Elmers are those whom offer nothing until asked, they realize you are truly wanting to learn then the departing of their knowledge begins. Show you are serious about learning, they are a wondrous faucet of information. Take something from them, skew it, claim it as your own or not have real interest and that Elmer is lost forever. I have seen that happen many times – not by me, I will say… and it saddens me to see someone steal someone else’s knowledge, or worse yet dispute it vehemently then claim to know more than the Elmer.
I can usually tell someone who is “full of it” right off as they stick their chest out, spout their garbage and dare anyone to refute them. Should someone try, they LOUDLY over talk you until you subside and give up, then boast they won the argument because you could not “beat” them. Take what info you can from your Elmers... that's how I learned a lot.  I've only been in ham radio since 1977  and dabbled in PSK31  from 2000 to 2006 when I found 070 club.  After 2006 I was "gung ho" for PSK !   In my few years with 070  I've learned a lot from the group.  Reading back through the archives is educational.

BTW, the term "Elmer" was coined by QST DX Editor, Rod Newkirk (W9BRD  SK) in his "How's DX?" column back in 1960's.  His Elmer was a guy named Elmer who went by the handle Bud .  Bud couldn't operate from his home after he moved, but was able to operate from his mobile in a parking lot. Over the years I've handled many of his bureau cards and he worked some amazing stations from that parking lot in Elgin, IL.    Anyhow  Elmer was a very helpful ham who helped many hams find their way in this hobby.  He's been immortalized since that column appeared way back when. Yes, he's still around and in a nursing home in Madison, WI., but no longer active on the air.

Even though mail comes in via UK twice a week, if Mario doesn't pick up it , it doesn't get answered. Then, there is the problem of his answering all the mail ... like he has nothing else to do ?  Think it will be one of those when he gets around to it things.  I guess patience will pay off ... soon I guess.
I succeeded; Nick's QSL card from Mario, VP8ALJ!
Getting to the Falkland Islands is decidedly different than using your traditional 747 British Airway flight as it entails flying in an RAF TriStar that leaves from Brize Norton, a UK military base, at midnight local time. As you would expect, the departure lounge was full of British Army 'squadies' getting ready to fly off to Kosovo. This was nothing like the Club Class lounges I'm used to when I travel with British Airways!
I based myself in Port Stanley on East FalklandI based myself in Port Stanley on East Falkland
My first concern was flight check-in. I had been told that there was a strict baggage weight limit of 22kg with a 15 per kg excess baggage charge. The trouble was my FT650, Tonna five-element 6m beam and the usual bits and pieces totaled 18kg alone. My suitcase weighed 19kg so I expected to have to have to plead for leniency on these charges (on my knees if necessary) but as it turned out they didn't seem to worry and I walked through customs control without getting my chequebook out of my pocket. Phew!soon I guess.

This is from Falklands info site  and may explain some....     n9avy

Mail Services

Overseas air letter mail is carried between the UK and the Islands once or twice weekly on the MOD chartered aircraft. Air parcel mail and DHL services are provided via the regular weekly air service with Chile. Mail is sorted in the Stanley Post Office, but there is no delivery services – mail boxes are available (free) in the Post Office. The surface mail service from UK is operated approximately every four or five weeks.

Have you tried his manager - LU8DPM ?    I'd email him first.

Otherwise QRZ address might work, but I think mail service is slow into Falklands . Think mail comes via  UK.

Another site I check says "no" to bureau, direct, etc.

He may just be a deadbeat QSLer !

Re: Funny

Once I had an Extra class licensee ask me the formula for a dipole antenna and I simply told him it was 468 divided by the freq in MHZ.  He said no that's not it !  After some discussion back and forth my friend (another Extra and antenna installer par excellence)  broke in and said it was correct formula to which the newly minted Extra replied "no it isn't !" .  We just left him with his half-vast ideas.  Bad thing he was an ARRLOfficial at the time and ex-President of local radio club.  Sad.

Real Elmers won't really volunteer info unless you ask.

Oh rest assured Jerry, I took all I could from my Elmers of the past and utilize all I can.
Same exact thing happens particularly in the political arena, and every other facet of life.

John:

Absolutely agree with you. I am not very sharp with ham radio – but I am pretty good with digital modes and have a good working understanding of same. That being said, I still look to my old Elmers, or anyone else with many more years of experience to get advice.

I have T-shirt that reads "Those who think they know it all are really annoying to those of us who do !"

I've run into many over the years both on the air and off who know it all.  I know that I don't know it all, but I really get annoyed with those who think they do.  Usually learn something new at least once a day which keeps me humble.

Ham radio is loaded with people like that guy.  There are some out there who really do know a lot, but they don't ADVertise !

There is some funny stuff when you stop to read some QSOs.  Just saw an undisclosed station ripping on another about macros .. obviously , he doesn't think highly of macros and told the other station he has more marcos if he likes macros.  The other stations sent his usual macro  and replied that he has 43 more if he'd like to see them all !   Ha-ha !!!
