I would like to take my entire log and separate out the PSK-31 contacts to put through the checker. Does anyone know of a way to do this? I have tried to take my entire log through the checker a couple times but nothing happens so I assume its too big for it? Around 40K. I put through just my contest log from this past weekend and it went fine and that is all that shows now.

Thanks

Re: Another QSL Question

Joseph Miller <kj8o.ham@...>

Thanks Steve,

eQSL by their own admission is not very easy to set up a temporary location. A friend of mine borrowed my call sign for the Worked Prefix contest and made 2,800 contacts. Now I have over 700 eQSLs in my inbox that I will not confirm since they were not made from my home location. Once I can get a new location set up with them, I am sorry to say that they will stay unconfirmed.

I always confirm contacts that I make, but with so many electronic choices available (QRZ, eQSL, Club Log, HRD, etc.) I can only spend so much time at it. Hence, paper cards and LOTW are my priorities. All else, I do as a convenience and time permitting.

If I were to send you a W3HF paper QSL for a QSO we had in 1995 (assuming that we really did have one!), would that be valid? Your log would show a QSO with WA2FKS, and that's the callsign you would need to put on your QSL to me.

Another way to look at it is that if you were to confirm a QSO with W3HF in 1995, you would have been working Bill Klugh in Delaware, not me.

The issue is that the eQSL community (read that as "users") often doesn't understand that their logs need to be partitioned to reflect new addresses, callsigns, etc. The information is in various help files, but the emphasis on ease of use of eQSL makes it simple for unknowing users to blunder forward. And since it's just as easy to upload a 15,000 QSO ADIF file as it is to upload a single QSO, people don't always think about what they're doing. I suspect that your contact didn't go back and send paper QSLs for all those old contacts, But s/he probably thinks of his/her eQSL account as equivalent to his/her log, and doesn't realize that uploading all those old QSOs effectively sends QSL "cards" with the new callsign to all the old contacts.

eQSL does have information on how to properly do this on its web site, and there are numerous people in help forums that can provide guidance, but it's easy to make a mistake.

In this regard, LoTW avoids this issue by requiring each QSO to be signed with a callsign certificate, and they verify the validity dates of the callsign before issuing the certificate. But this is done at the expense of complexity--every unique callsign or variant requires a new certificate that must be issued in advance.

Re: Another rant

Dan Morris - KZ3T

pdc — Well stated.  Hmmm, I was just writing up something just about what you said so no use to put something out that is pretty much what you stated.  I agree wholeheartedly with you.  People talk like LoTW is the greatest thing since sliced bread but then I see CONSTANTLY on this list and another list especially where people are ALWAYS having problems with LoTW.  I use both but I personally prefer eQSL (my choice).  I only use LoTW just to give those that don’t use eQSL a contact/qsl for any awards they may be chasing after.  I guarantee you there are those that send in contacts in to LoTW much the same as eQSL and there ends up not being a valid contact/qsl.

As they say to each his own.  I’m not bashing anyone so don’t get on my case.  I say if you like LoTW and not eQSL, use LoTW, no problem.  No skin off my back.  But vice versa also and don’t knock those that do use eQSL.  I’ve rejected several contacts on eQSL but sometimes I wonder if I forgot to log it.  I realize that many times we get going in contests, etc and it can be fairly easy to miss a contact.  There are still lots of people who write them down on  a piece of paper and then transfer to a log or whatever.  Whoa, that is too easy to miss getting something into the log.  I know, I’ve done it in the past.

Well, enuff said.  I’m not one to say much on any of these lists. What a lot of people don’t realize is the number of people that are on this list and when one starts ranting away there are way too many opinions that get involved and then sometimes the list loses its purpose.   Everybody has their own opinion and most of the time others are not going to change it.

And another thing (my pet peeve) if you want to flame me send me an email directly and don’t be like an idiot and send it to the whole list!!  Thank you for letting me rant a bit myself.   I try to look over my emails before I send them out to attempt to make sure I’m not flaming anyone, however, everyone reads something into every email whether you meant it or not so all I can say is be careful what you say and how you say it.

Thank you and most of all let’s all have fun on the bands.  That’s the main thing.

I don't think eQSL is populated by more flakes than LotW or anywhere else.  The difference is that eQSL shows you their flakery, while LotW does not.  It would be interesting to dig into the LotW database and see how many "rejected" QSLs there really are in there.  I think that result would be surprising.

Lots of people make logging errors.  Make no mistake, any eQSLs you reject would have ended up as a paper log back in the day and again, you just wouldn't know about it and wouldn't be able to say "no" to them.  Also, YOU make log errors - maybe you missed logging one... that happens a lot more than you might think with macros.

People say "eQSL has no credibility in DX", but what does that mean?  It's a reasonable log backup place, and it's convenient.  That's the only credibility I've ever assigned it.  In every way I can see it is precisely as credible as Logbook of the World.  In fact, the only substantial difference between LotW and eQSL is that the former can be used for ARRL awards and costs money to do so, whereas the latter can be used for CQ awards and is free to do so.

Do people fudge on eQSL?  Yep.  They fudge paper QSLs too - I just got a paper card from someone for a contact 9 years ago.  Seems his callsign has changed and he's re-issuing cards with the new callsign.  Sorry dude, I didn't make a contact with W1**, I made it with K4***.  Do paper QSLs have credibility in the DX world?

I've never figured out what level of awesomeness would be necessary to get people not to hate on eQSL.  My guess is that it's actually too easy to use - people seem to like the difficulties and hassle that LotW presents.

eQSL... use it... or don't... but don't think there's some kind of high ground by not using it.

There are forum like pages on FB for about anything you can imagine. For me there's lots of radio, photo, car & music pages. You can set up an account with sort of a nickname and set tight limits. You don't need to friend anyone you don't want to. I got reacquainted with an old college friend now living in Alaska and made a trip up there to visit he and his wife. Most of the big name hams are on FB too. I love it and the ability to stay in touch with so many family, friends and acquaintances. My wife resisted signing up for years only to find most of the pics of our 3 grandkids showed up there first. She's having a great time with it now. It's your loss to not set up an account.

I get far better interaction on specific forums for interests I share with others. Even that is far from perfect, like actually spending time with people.

I received an eQSL request from an 070 member who, at the time of the qso, had a call assigned to him that is different than one he is requesting confirmation for.  He upgraded and received a vanity call and now wants a qsl card for his new call.  Is that request valid?

My daughter, if I had one, could more easily text the photo to me.

Yes Virginia, there are alternatives to FB. :D

This isn't FD related: Re: FD Participation Email

Guys,

If you want to carry this on, *P L E A S E* re-title it?

I have to read all of the FD emails, and this definitely isn’t FD. It’s evolved into to many other things, and will solve nothing.

Thanks mucho for your understanding.

John:

I agree with you.  Don't like my info all over the place.  To some degree my info on Facebook is bogus. That really screws up those who want to snoop.  My presence on FB is mostly as a troll.

I would hope that those who send us all those wonderful emails about how they will make us rich would turn their attention to the information gatherers ... serves 'em right !

But I shall fight it as much as humanly possible. Surprisingly, you will not find “much” on me on the Internet (I did do that recently) as I am very careful where I sign in, and I certainly will not create an account having to do with anything financial. As for the Progressive thing you refer to… the 1st time I saw that snoop device I said no way in “heck” would I EVER allow that device in my vehicle. Shoot I have SYNC in my pickup that remains a dead space as I will not even allow that to do anything for me. No I am not paranoid, I am careful… big difference.

That however does nothing to allow me to willingly give into facebook et al where everyone “meets.” Want to meet me, come to my location and see me in person, want to talk, again come to my location and talk to me or at least give me a phone call. Tis amazing who and what people will call “friends” today.

Ever wonder why the current generation of people are considered obese? They sit on their duffs in front of a computer or a “smart” phone and type to one another. No need to go out and exercise…. Oh crap, I said a bad word… exercise…. Sorry for my offense.

John:

Sorry to tell you that "privacy" is a thing of the past.  There are tons of information scattered all over the net about everyone of us.  Just google your name (as I did)  and you'll find some info on yourself plus that of others with same name.

There are cameras everywhere these days and if there is "facial recognition" then, they got you (whoever "they" is !)

A group of us were chatting last night about another invasion of privacy in those plug in modules that Progressive and State Farm have for checking your driving habits.

The when you go to grocery store or any store and use a check, credit, debit card or a store ID , they will track your spending/purchases.

I don't like it either, but this is our Brave new world ...

Would love to see the pictures, but since I refuse to become a Facebook member to spread my personal info all over the Internet I guess I just have to pass. Why does EVERYTHING gotta be facebook centered??

Not being a facebook or twitter member now puts you as some sort of weirdo or strange individual. I value my privacy WAY more than that. Makes no sense to me why anyone would willingly want to be subjected to and being bothered by a bunch of people they do not know, never will know and surely do not care to give personal info to. Then there is the ever intrusive ADS and so on.  I only know of this because of the other acquaintances who are so in love with this stupid “social media thing” and therefore forgets how to act in real life. Call me old fashion but I think pen to paper or a simple phone call is more “social” and allows for a whole lot “misunderstandings.”

I do not recall calling anyone stupid. I said your pictures were not accessible to me since I refuse to use facebook. I also do not recall stating anyone was stupid for using facebook, however I did chose to note I will not use it and wondered why everyone thinks that is the only way to communicate. If you chose to us facebook then feel free to do so. I did not insinuate nor imply anyone was stupid or whatever just because they use that service. I straight out said I would not use it and personally I feel society feels using facebook or twitter et  al  is the only “sociably” acceptable way to communicate with other human beings. I strongly and fervently disagree and to punish a person because they will not use a “social network” is unfair.

Look at radio stations for one small example; “like” or “follow” them for exclusive offers or the only way to enter a contest or whatever blah blah blah. It is ridiculous! Get breaking news ONLY on twitter/facebook. Really!!!???

John,

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion,  but calling someone else stupid just because they don't have the same opinion as you probably isn't going to help you win friends and influence people.

If you would like to see my field day pictures,  just ask.  Nicely.  If not,  that's OK too.  But I am quite certain that I am not stupid just because I use Facebook and understand its privacy settings.

Peace, brother.
