Re: FB - social networking lies

Brian Hemmis

There are forum like pages on FB for about anything you can imagine. For me there's lots of radio, photo, car & music pages. You can set up an account with sort of a nickname and set tight limits. You don't need to friend anyone you don't want to. I got reacquainted with an old college friend now living in Alaska and made a trip up there to visit he and his wife. Most of the big name hams are on FB too. I love it and the ability to stay in touch with so many family, friends and acquaintances. My wife resisted signing up for years only to find most of the pics of our 3 grandkids showed up there first. She's having a great time with it now. It's your loss to not set up an account.

I reject those with a note QSL already sent to the previous call.

Most times it is just someone who uploaded their entire log under the new call.

Hey, guys - I rarely step in to quell a "conversation", but the tenor of the Facebook threads has taken a pretty negative turn, so please let's consider it wrapped up now.

This isn't FD related: Re: FD Participation Email

Guys,

If you want to carry this on, *P L E A S E* re-title it?

I have to read all of the FD emails, and this definitely isn’t FD. It’s evolved into to many other things, and will solve nothing.

Thanks mucho for your understanding.

I agree with you.  Don't like my info all over the place.  To some degree my info on Facebook is bogus. That really screws up those who want to snoop.  My presence on FB is mostly as a troll.

I would hope that those who send us all those wonderful emails about how they will make us rich would turn their attention to the information gatherers ... serves 'em right !

But I shall fight it as much as humanly possible. Surprisingly, you will not find “much” on me on the Internet (I did do that recently) as I am very careful where I sign in, and I certainly will not create an account having to do with anything financial. As for the Progressive thing you refer to… the 1st time I saw that snoop device I said no way in “heck” would I EVER allow that device in my vehicle. Shoot I have SYNC in my pickup that remains a dead space as I will not even allow that to do anything for me. No I am not paranoid, I am careful… big difference.

That however does nothing to allow me to willingly give into facebook et al where everyone “meets.” Want to meet me, come to my location and see me in person, want to talk, again come to my location and talk to me or at least give me a phone call. Tis amazing who and what people will call “friends” today.

Ever wonder why the current generation of people are considered obese? They sit on their duffs in front of a computer or a “smart” phone and type to one another. No need to go out and exercise…. Oh crap, I said a bad word… exercise…. Sorry for my offense.

Sorry to tell you that "privacy" is a thing of the past.  There are tons of information scattered all over the net about everyone of us.  Just google your name (as I did)  and you'll find some info on yourself plus that of others with same name.

There are cameras everywhere these days and if there is "facial recognition" then, they got you (whoever "they" is !)

A group of us were chatting last night about another invasion of privacy in those plug in modules that Progressive and State Farm have for checking your driving habits.

The when you go to grocery store or any store and use a check, credit, debit card or a store ID , they will track your spending/purchases.

I don't like it either, but this is our Brave new world ...

Would love to see the pictures, but since I refuse to become a Facebook member to spread my personal info all over the Internet I guess I just have to pass. Why does EVERYTHING gotta be facebook centered??

Not being a facebook or twitter member now puts you as some sort of weirdo or strange individual. I value my privacy WAY more than that. Makes no sense to me why anyone would willingly want to be subjected to and being bothered by a bunch of people they do not know, never will know and surely do not care to give personal info to. Then there is the ever intrusive ADS and so on.  I only know of this because of the other acquaintances who are so in love with this stupid “social media thing” and therefore forgets how to act in real life. Call me old fashion but I think pen to paper or a simple phone call is more “social” and allows for a whole lot “misunderstandings.”

If you chose to us facebook then feel free to do so. I did not insinuate nor imply anyone was stupid or whatever just because they use that service. I straight out said I would not use it and personally I feel society feels using facebook or twitter et  al  is the only “sociably” acceptable way to communicate with other human beings. I strongly and fervently disagree and to punish a person because they will not use a “social network” is unfair.

Look at radio stations for one small example; “like” or “follow” them for exclusive offers or the only way to enter a contest or whatever blah blah blah. It is ridiculous! Get breaking news ONLY on twitter/facebook. Really!!!???

John,

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion,  but calling someone else stupid just because they don't have the same opinion as you probably isn't going to help you win friends and influence people.

If you would like to see my field day pictures,  just ask.  Nicely.  If not,  that's OK too.  But I am quite certain that I am not stupid just because I use Facebook and understand its privacy settings.

Peace, brother.

The same could be asked about all the time wasted reading ham radio yahoo groups, like this one. :D

Do not misunderstand me. I am not defending Facebook. I find the feed to be cluttered with all sorts of crap that is not social in the least.

As to the ham radio Facebook pages, I subscribe to a few to do with novice rigs, home brew radio construction, and CW. This is a lot better way to share circuit designs, than the muddled yahoo groups. There is even a Facebook groups app that lets you view just those group feeds, while ignoring the usual feed you get to your Facebook account.

Re: Another rant

ve3oij@...

I don't think eQSL is populated by more flakes than LotW or anywhere else.  The difference is that eQSL shows you their flakery, while LotW does not.  It would be interesting to dig into the LotW database and see how many "rejected" QSLs there really are in there.  I think that result would be surprising.

Lots of people make logging errors.  Make no mistake, any eQSLs you reject would have ended up as a paper log back in the day and again, you just wouldn't know about it and wouldn't be able to say "no" to them.  Also, YOU make log errors - maybe you missed logging one... that happens a lot more than you might think with macros.

People say "eQSL has no credibility in DX", but what does that mean?  It's a reasonable log backup place, and it's convenient.  That's the only credibility I've ever assigned it.  In every way I can see it is precisely as credible as Logbook of the World.  In fact, the only substantial difference between LotW and eQSL is that the former can be used for ARRL awards and costs money to do so, whereas the latter can be used for CQ awards and is free to do so.

Do people fudge on eQSL?  Yep.  They fudge paper QSLs too - I just got a paper card from someone for a contact 9 years ago.  Seems his callsign has changed and he's re-issuing cards with the new callsign.  Sorry dude, I didn't make a contact with W1**, I made it with K4***.  Do paper QSLs have credibility in the DX world?

I've never figured out what level of awesomeness would be necessary to get people not to hate on eQSL.  My guess is that it's actually too easy to use - people seem to like the difficulties and hassle that LotW presents.

eQSL... use it... or don't... but don't think there's some kind of high ground by not using it.

But if the radio soundcard is the Windows default, there's still a good chance for it to happen, from windows system sounds, or qrz.com webpages (against policy, but you find those that auto-play audio, or worse & confusing, their live radio stream), or ham software (e.g. hrd or spotcollector or other audio spot alarms; or JT65/JT-Alert; or even software you don't realize has sound effects, especially if it's going out the radio!)...

It's such and easy & cheap solution to get a el-cheapo $5 (or less!) USB soundcard to set as the windows default, i highly recommend it.

$2 with free shipping -- pretty hard to beat that!

careful setting a ham sound card as the windows default!!

Really recommend using any other sound card (e.g. cheapo USB stick) as the default,  for windows sounds/dings/email notification/web videos or ads, etc ... all of that will go out over the air if it occurs while you're transmitting.

This is a common topic on the JT65/JT-Alert related reflectors, but applies to all digital.

On a similar note, took me a while to realize that my IC706MKII mic is "hot" when i'm transmitting digital (PSK/JT65),  so i have to unplug is when working those modes, since the rig is in USB (no "DATA" mode like more modern rigs).  So i'm sure i echo'd some phone calls, dog barks, etc over the air.

~~~
For the serial<->USB issue ... try a different USB port, too.  sometimes windows is weird....
Hello, folks. I was pretty active using PSK last year. I needed a
new computer in Jan. I made all the same connections with my NOMIC,
sound card and alternative MIC connection. I receive beautifully - any
signal on the waterfall, BUT, I cannot get my rig (IC 746pro) to
TRANSMIT! I tried to open every com port (one at a time), checked
connections, etc. I'm stumped. Any ideas, anyone? I'd sure appreciate
it. thanks, Marcus, KM5EH (070-714)
This computer has 3 sound cards, the Window default is NOT used
for digital modes.
careful setting a ham sound card as the windows default!!
Really recommend using any other sound card (e.g. cheapo USB
stick) as
the default, for windows sounds/dings/email notification/web
videos
or ads, etc ... all of that will go out over the air if it
occurs
while you're transmitting.
This is a common topic on the JT65/JT-Alert related
reflectors, but
applies to all digital.
On a similar note, took me a while to realize that my
IC706MKII mic is
"hot" when i'm transmitting digital (PSK/JT65), so i have to
unplug
is when working those modes, since the rig is in USB (no
"DATA" mode
like more modern rigs). So i'm sure i echo'd some phone
calls, dog
barks, etc over the air.
For the serial<->USB issue ... try a different USB port, too.
sometimes windows is weird....
I do not recall calling anyone stupid. I said your pictures were not accessible to me since I refuse to use facebook. I also do not recall stating anyone was stupid for using facebook, however I did chose to note I will not use it and wondered why everyone thinks that is the only way to communicate. If you chose to us facebook then feel free to do so. I did not insinuate nor imply anyone was stupid or whatever just because they use that service. I straight out said I would not use it and personally I feel society feels using facebook or twitter et  al  is the only “sociably” acceptable way to communicate with other human beings. I strongly and fervently disagree and to punish a person because they will not use a “social network” is unfair.
Look at radio stations for one small example; “like” or “follow” them for exclusive offers or the only way to enter a contest or whatever blah blah blah. It is ridiculous! Get breaking news ONLY on twitter/facebook. Really!!!???
John,
Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion,  but calling someone else stupid just because they don't have the same opinion as you probably isn't going to help you win friends and influence people.
If you would like to see my field day pictures,  just ask.  Nicely.  If not,  that's OK too.  But I am quite certain that I am not stupid just because I use Facebook and understand its privacy settings.
Peace, brother.
Ted:
I agree with you. Eqsl is populated by a lot of flakes. I never use their Eqsls for any awards.  Years ago I did a program on QSLing at the local club. People learned a lot they didn't know because the gleaned info from my years as a QSL Manager for DX stations.
With LoTW either everything is right or you get nothing. That's the way it should be. LoTW also gives you a 30 minute window for discrepancies in time keeping.
Only thing I can figure out with these 13 Colonies is that either they're not the sharpest tools in the shed or they are cheating.
Jerry, as a new General Class back in 2009, I logged everything in sight ( including the indoor and outdoor cats). I joined  eqsl.com, LOTW and did the paper thing. After a few years, I became of the opinion that Eqsl.co ,at the end of the day, really has not much credibility in the DX world.the day, just really has no credibility in the world of  DX. I took it out of my macros and have not visited my account in years. It is just too much hassle as there are so many flakes out here that are dishonest...maybe time to let go
Well since my last rant on bogus QSLs at Eqsl , I've 3 more. All of which I rejected.
As an OO, I could report these guys for improper ID, but I won't do that. I worked one call sign and nothing they sent matched up.
If I worked K2X , all I want to see is K2X on QSL and not K2x/W1XXXX !
This is ridiculous as these operators at 13 Colonies don't have a clue about QSLing OR they are trying to claim credit for QSOs they did not make with there own station.
End of rant !
