9N - NEPAL. Just a reminder! By the time you read this Kiyo, JH3PAS,
should be back in Katmandu and active as 9N7AS until December 30th
Also, look for Kazu, JA8MWU, to be active from the capital city as
9N7WU between December 30th and January 6th. Both operators plan
to be active on 160-6 meters. 9N7AS will operate SSB, CW, RTTY and
PSK31, and 9N7WU will be mainly on SSB only. QSL direct to their
home callsigns or to the JARL QSL Bureau.

Japan. [TNX OPDX]

G - As part of the "Lighthouse Christmas Lights 2002" event, Anvil
Point Lighthouse (ENG-001) will be activated on 27-30 December.
Look for GB2APL on 10-160 metres CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31. QSL
via G0PSE either direct or through the bureau (e-mail requests for
bureau cards are welcome at g0pse@qsl.net). [TNX 425DXN]

KP2- U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. John Walker, WZ8D, informs OPDX that he and
Joe Pater, W8GEX, are heading back to the Caribbean December 30th
through January 8th. They are staying at Windwood on St. Croix
(IOTA NA-106 and Grid Sq. FK-77). They have been issued the call
N8Z. They will operate 160-6 meters on CW,SSB and PSK. QSL to WZ8D
(SASE PSE or IRC and SAE). [TNX OPDX]

V6 - MICRONESIA. Bert, V73GOD, Bert, will be active as V63USA from
Kosrae Island (OC-059) between December 26th and January 1st.
Activity will be mostly on 17/12/10/6 meters SSB, and possibly PSK
Bert will be active in his spare time as this is a vacation. QSL
via V63USA: P.O. Box 1480, APO AP 96555, USA.

YI - IRAQ. Steve, OM3JW, informs OPDX that his son Mike, OM2DX, is the
newest operator at the Slovak Embassy in Baghdad. He will use the
YI9OM callsign a few weeks, then he will try to get other callsign
(probably YI9DX). He is using a TS-850SAT and IC-706, Logperiodic
antenna on 10-30 MHz, a dipole,an Inverted Vee on 40 and 80 meters
and a long wire on 160 meters. He does have an amplifier (1kW),
but it does not work on 160m. Mike will be active on CW/SSB/RTTY
PSK31, and he is active every day after 2030z on 1832-1833 kHz.
His stay in Baghdad will be 2-4 years. The QSL Manager for YI9OM
beginning November 28, 2002, is his father OM3JW. [TNX OPDX]

I do not know anything about the lap tops but I do know a guy who has used the byterunner converters with good results. I know there used to be a USB to about 8 serial adaptors but I do not see them now. You can go to http://www.byterunner.com and look at the USB-25-COM. It is for only 1 serial port but at least it will work. They are in stock and the price is $19.95. They will ship the same day if the order is placed before 4:45 Eastern time. I hope this helps.

Subject: Re: [070] Pal Top interfacing?

Hi Ernie,
I'd like to see some more info on this subject. The only way I've been able
to work PSK or SSTV on my laptop (Compaq Presario 1700T) is to use the mic
in/spkr out jacks from/to the transceiver, along with a manual tx/rx switch.
In order to have a "Serial" (db9/25) port, I have to have a docking station
just like the one I use on the desk to interface to everything I used with
the tower, before I got the laptop. Even then I have to use a USB mouse
instead of the serial mouse I normally use. The docking port has a sort of
miniature Centronics like plug sticking up from it, and the lap top gets
pressed down onto it. Not the most reliable connection scheme, but usually
works. It loses the connection to the serial mouse occasionally (requiring
shut down, reseat & reboot). I've never noticed it dropping out the TX
during a QSO. That could be a real problem. I have heard of USB to Parallel
port adapters (I think DQU uses one of them) so maybe there are USB to old
fashion Serial port adapters. Maybe I'll ask Santa for one of them.

Only my personal thoughts & experiences.

I agree with Rich on all points.

1. There is no pinout conversion possible between USB and the
"old" serial ports.

2. USB-serial port converters can be used, usually with good
results.

3. Virtually all laptops made in the past five years have
soundblaster-compatible sound cards built-in, so software
shouldn't be a problem unless the operating system is not
compatible. I'm using an old Toshiba laptop, vintage 97 or so
I think. It runs Win95, and I'm not going to change it, but
DigiPan v1.5 runs fine on it.

4. USB sound cards are an option, but the ones I've seen are
pretty expensive.

Ernie,

I'll start the ball rolling.

I don't think you can connect anything except a USB device to a USB
port. AFAIK, there aren't any RS-232 signals (TxD, RTS, DTR, etc.) on
a USB port. You have to buy a USB-to-serial adaptor, and then you can
use the serial port(s) on this device like any other serial port. I
believe this means you can use DTR and RTS for PTT, CW keying, etc. I
suggest you consult http://www.aa5au.com/usb for more info on these
devices.

One problem: most USB-to-serial adaptors do not support 5-bit Baudot
on TxD, so until recently you could not do FSK through them. Makato
Mori, the author of MMTTY, has just written a DLL for MMTTY 1.63 that
can do FSK from any serial port, including one on a USB serial
adapter. You can find it in the files area of the MMTTY Yahoo group
(comfsk103.zip). It may need a fast CPU and a recent version of
Windows, though.

As for sound cards, I would expect that if the laptop has microphone
and speaker jacks, you can use those with the appropriate level of
attenuation. If not, I believe there is such a thing as a USB sound
card, and there may also be PCMCIA (pc-card) sound card peripherals
for laptops, but I know nothing about these. Maybe someone else can
help with the sound card part of Ernie's question?
