And to expand on split operation, it can be done through the digital

I think that 070 endorsements (such as PSK Golf) generally require the
PSK31 mode for the qualifying QSO.

Also in my experience DX PSK63 requires more power and better antenna and
condx to make the contact. ZL7 is no walk in the park for our east
coasters, so that may be a consideration especially for them.

If the DX runs in split mode as most do, the PSK31 mode should work fine.
The only problem for some ops is that they aren't familiar with split PSK
operation and sometimes present QRN on the DX QRG.

Forgot to mention that somewhere around that date in 2013 is the BARTG RTTY contest.  Anyone know actual dates ????  It could have an effect if it's in March 21-27 window.

The East Coast station should be tougher. Perhaps calling for U.S. Call areas 1,2,3 and 4 ONLY might work. After that 8, 9,& 0 . Follow up with 5, 6 & 7 as propagation shifts . But let's not forget to work in in Canadian friends .

Working by call areas can be a chore, but it helps to sort out mess.   Of course you need to call NA ONLY, SA only,  Europe only, JA/Asia only, and VK/ZL only (or they won't let you back into ZL, hi !).

After years of working DX, I have found that many still do not know how to work split... they're clueless !

Just a few suggestions which may or may not be pertinent. When the rubber hits the road, it's the DX stations who is in control !   He calls the shots.

Folks

I am planning a mini DXpedition to the Chatham Islands for
21-27 March 2013.  This will be a PSK only operation
(well almost, some 80 metre SSB at 08:00U)

Things are slowly coming together.  My XYL has got
excited and will be coming along, which will help
greatly.  The operation will be from the Ultimate
Hideaway in Kiangaroa.

I hope to be using the call ZL7LC.

While researching the Chatham Island I came across another
DXpedition.  ZL7A should be operating during 1-7 Nov
2012.  He states that he will be running PSK and the
frequencies that he will be operational on.  My
experience with the recent 3D2C doesn't give me that much
hope as they mainly ran RTTY and I never heard them on the
PSK frequencies they listed.

You can find Hiro's November data at  http://w1vx.net/pedition/zl7/2012ZL7.htm

Will keep you informed as things progress.

I agree Tom, particularly on the split comment. It seems much worse on
digi modes whether psk31 or even rtty. People need to spreadout also. I
think W3HF might have so ideas since Steve ran from Guam.

Jim;
A thought for consideration/discussion.....
psk31 vs. psk63 It appears to me that psk31 is much slower and thus
problematical for a DX ped. What I have seen is that psk63 runs alot
faster (maybe faster than rtty).

Any thoughts?

I'll definitely be looking for you. BTW, anything you can do in the way
of online logs is a help.

N9AV - K9ATI - WTW & WOTMC Explanation

Ted,
Maybe this can shed some light on this.

N9AVY = Jerry's callsign.
K9ATI = SON OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS TEN TEN - A club call for which Jerry is Trustee.

Larry, WA7HDZ, may claim contact with two "A's" for both WTW credit and WOTMC credit if he works both calls. It doesn't matter if he works them back to back, or at different times.

Of course with WOTMC, to claim credit for both calls, with the same WOTMC it must be within the same calendar month.
And,
Of course with WTW, to claim credit for both calls, it may be applied to one Endorsement (Continent) only. Work them again? That could be applied to different Endorsements (Continents). This is done automatically by the KJ4IZW award checking software.
