Charlie,

I am saddened by the passing of the SSB. Please accept my most condolences. I realize the hunt for a suitable replacement will be emotional and take much time and soul searching but if you find something close you must block out sentiment and get on with your life … and our awards.

I know there is no financial level that could compensate you for your loss but I will gladly make a donation to the SSB replacement fund. I will send the normal donation to cover the expenses and add some for a replacement SSB.

Thank you for all you do.

I want to put out an early request for stations that would like to be a
bonus station for this year's TDW May 25 - May27. Last year's Top Dog Chuck
N2EOC has already agreed and will have the East Coast covered. I will need
stations for the Midwest, West Coast and a DX station. I would like to give
someone new a chance so if you have been a bonus station before thank you
for that but let's give a new person a shot at managing pile-ups. I am doing
this early to give people time to check their calendars and make sure the
weekend is clear to operate. Since you as a Bonus Station will be the center
of attention I need people that are committed to work the whole contest. I
do not mean 24/7 but a good full time effort. Think about it and be ready to
let me know, I plan on making the formal request around the second week of
April so we will have 31 Flavors done and in the logs. At that time I will
provide an email address for your requests.

First Alert: PSK 31 Flavors Contest - April 7, 2012

K5PAX

PODXS 070 Club - PSK 31 FLAVORS CONTEST - 2012

Phase Shifting where no contest has Phase Shifted before!

When:

Saturday, 07 April 2012 from 12:00-18:00 your local time [not Universal Time]. This is a rolling start across the globe that should give opportunity to all who play.

Who:

All licensed radio amateurs. Look for Ø7Ø Club members in the event. Learn about this esteemed association on its web page: www.podxs070.com

Why:

To have a contest where participants get to play with PSK variants. The PSK 31 Flavors Contest is an exciting warm-up for the TARA Skirmish multi-mode contest.

Categories:

The Contest will have three separate entry categories:
QRP: Maximum power not exceeding 5 watts
Low: Maximum power not exceeding 20 watts
Medium: Maximum power not exceeding 100 watts

Modes:

Use the following 5 PSK mode variants -

BPSK 31 [Narrow bandwidth]
QPSK 31 [Narrow bandwidth]
BPSK 63 [Wide bandwidth]
QPSK 63 [Wide bandwidth]
BPSK 125 [Very wide bandwidth]

These mode variants are available in popular software such as MixW and the free MultiPSK, DM780 and FLDigi software packages. See the following websites:

MultiPSK:
http://multipsk.eqth.info/

Digital Master 780 - Part of the Ham Radio Deluxe Suite:
http://www.ham-radio-deluxe.com/Programs/DigitalMaster780.aspx

FLDigi:
http://www.southgatearc.org/news/march2009/fldigi.htm

Frequencies:

20 Meters only

- normal PSK sub-band for narrow mode variants,

- sub-band 14072.5 - 14080 kHz suggested for wide bandwidth mode variants.

Some of the contest mode variants are relatively wide. Please allow sufficient room between your signals and those of your fellow PSK explorers. Certainly give plenty of room to civilians in the accepted PSK and RTTY sub-bands.

Exchange:

For Ø7Ø Members – State/Province/DXCC Entity + Ø7Ø member number

For Non-Ø7Ø Members - State/Province/DXCC Entity + Name

Suggested Contest Call:

'CQ CQ PSK 31 Flavors de Your Call k'

It may be useful to call CQ in BPSK 31, indicating which mode variant will follow. I mean, I'm not sure we'll be able to recognize all those traces yet, will we...

'CQ CQ PSK 31 Flavors de Your Call - switching to <Mode Variant> k'

Score:

Calculate claimed scores as follows --

QSO Points: 1 point per station contacted

Contacts counted once per PSK mode variant

For example, K8IJ contacts N3DQU as follows:

- Once in BPSK 31
- Once in QPSK 63
- Once in BPSK 125

K8IJ and N3DQU can count 3 QSO points for these contacts

Multipliers: 1 multiplier for each State/Province/DXCC Entity in each mode variant

Count the number of US States, Canadian Provinces and DXCC countries (S/P/Cs) worked in each mode variant.

KH6 and KL7 count both as states and as separate DXCC entities. Be sure to count US and Canada as DXCC entities.

For example, K8IJ makes the following contacts:

- 25 States/Provinces/DXCCs in BPSK 31
- 15 States/Provinces/DXCCs in BPSK 63
- 10 States/Provinces/DXCCs in QPSK 31

K8IJ can count a total of 50 multipliers for these contacts.

Total Score: QSO Points X Multipliers

The wise contester will use as many PSK mode variants as possible!

Submissions and Logs:

Submit claimed scores using the PSK 31 Flavors Online Entry Form. Deadline for submission of entries is April 21, 2012 (2 weeks after the contest).

The top five scores in each category will be asked to submit their contest logs for checking. Logs should include for each QSO:
- Date/Time (UTC)
- Call
- Mode Variant
- Exchange

Logs may be in any of the following exchangeable formats: TXT, ADIF, DOC, XLS, CBR, WPD or CSV.

Awards:

Certificates will be awarded to the top scorer in each category.

All Ø7Ø members participating and submitting logs will receive endorsements.

You know, I had sort of an epiphany regarding the missing curl, and fixed it yesterday... so this new version checks for curl and fails if it is missing. I use fedora so at the moment, two distros checked..

regarding crontab, indeed, checking once a week or every 3 days will be nice.

using Linux and fldigi for Linux.

I find anoying whenever I have to update my help files (cty.dat,
AGMemberList.txt and lotw1.txt) for fldigi

This script updates cty.dat, AGMemberList.txt and lotw1.txt files
located under your ~/.fldigi directory.

hope you enjoy it.

How to use it?
Rember it is for Linux, you have to have installed fldigi already as
the ~/.fldigi directory must exists.

Save the attached file as updfldigi.sh into your home dir and then
execute it via shell:

sh updfldigi.sh

QRX for some seconds and voil! your help files will be updated. You
may run it as many times as you wish but dont abuse, run it every day
or two.

comments and changes will be appreciated.

Hpe to CU tonight in the waterfall.

Re: Alupaint - info IN SHOPS FROM APRIL

Joseph Miller <radiodxer2000@...>

A few years ago, the Voice of America did a story about a radio station that transmitted through the ground, grounded their antenna in the air, and could be heard quite well in China.

(dated April 1 of course)

PRESS RELEASE 29/03/12

"Wiltshire based radio enthusiast and short-wave listener Michael Tapper in
conjunction with a leading UK specialist paint manufacturer comes news of a
new conductive paint for all types of aluminium aerials. The product aimed
at commercial and amateur radio users in the 50MHz to 1296MHz part of the
spectrum, will be available through local branches of well known High Street
store within the next month. A spokesman for the developer stated "this is
truly an outstanding substance providing enormous improvement in both
transmit and received radio signals". In tests on aerials treated with
Alupaint, background noise was reduced by up to 20% and antenna gain
improved by up to 2.15 dbi. Mike Tapper a paint technologist developed paint
and submitted a Patent around 10 years ago, but until recently had could not
raise commercial interest in fine tuning the Alupaint. Mike will be
launching a website soon and will be confirming the retail outlet where the
paint can be purchased."
