W3HF/4 QSL cards

Steve W3HF

Well, I THINK I am sending out the last of the USA cards tomorrow.
If anyone doesn't receive the card within the next week or so, please
contact me and I'll send another one. I lost some log file updates last
night (which showed which cards went out yesterday), so I may
have made some mistakes.

Some of the DX cards are also going out tomorrow. I'll post another
message later when the last of those go out.

Note that these QSLs are the ones that are going direct to all 070
members I contacted. All other DX will go via bureau, and other
domestic will be sent upon request.

Steve

Re: Just what we NEED a Contest

Peter Baskind <pbaskind@...>

Well what you think??
I like the idea a lot. Ultimately, it's all fun. But I think that the band choices could be tweaked just a bit.

I notice the schedule has:

May 10 meters Start 0300z Thursday night
June 6 meters everyone starts at 0000z Monday night
July 10 meters everyone starts at 0100z Tuesday night

Let me say I am THRILLED that 10m and 6m are listed. But we have them lumped together ONLY in the E-skip season. Absolutely, 6m should be in June (the most active E-skip month), but perhaps one of the 10m contests should be moved to Fall, when the band is alive with paths across the Atlantic and Pacific.

Further, during the E-skip season, the start times are a bit late. E-skip openings generally (I say "generally" because sporadic E is called "sporadic" for a reason) peak late morning LOCAL time, take a break during midday, and come back around 6pm LOCAL time. They drop out around 10pm, but occasionally go to midnight.

Of course, therein lies the problem with an E-dependent contest -- one never knows if the band will open. In the most recent 6m contest (the weekend of July 20th), some reported no propagation at all. I saw some, but only for a couple of hours to one specific geographical region (a few 1s, 2s, 3s, and northern 4s). But, I don't think there is anything one can do about that -- there's an element of chance in contests. That's all part of the fun.

Perhaps it's an oversimplification to cast the same light on 10 and 6m. But, the two bands propagate very similarly -- especially in the Summer. If 10m opens for E-skip, 6m is almost always going to open (at least for a moment or two).

Just a thought from a guy who loves 10m and 6.

But, as to the concept of quick hit-and-run contests? Great idea.

I would like to know if anyone would like to do a 1 hour Sprint every
month?

Here is what I have in mind.

1 hour (different start time each month)
1 band (different each month)
Different week night each month (i.e. 2nd Monday, 2nd Tuesday...)

Every QSO counts as 1 point. THAT’S ALL THE SCORING!
Just report the total points/QSO's. SEND NO LOGS!

The winner would be posted on the Web Page as King of the Hill for the
month. NO AWARDS...

Sample Schedule:
June 6 meters everyone starts at 0000z Monday night
July 10 meters everyone starts at 0100z Tuesday night
Aug 15 meters start 0200Z Wednesday night
Sep 20 meters start 0300z Thursday night
Oct 40 Meters start 0000z Monday night
Nov 80 meters start 0100z Tuesday night
Dec 160 meters start 0200z Wednesday night
Jan 80 meters start 0300z Thursday night
Feb 40 meters start 0000z Monday night
Mar 20 meters start 0100z Tuesday night
Apr 15 meters start 0200z Wednesday night
May 10 meters Start 0300z Thursday night

Well what you think??
If you like the idea should we change the start time?
I left out the weekends as all the other events are on the weekends.

This is just something to do and will help me get the LONP, 88 and some of
the other awards.
We will have a good time and place to look for other members and EVERY QSO
counts even the non-070 members.

Well ?? I would like to hear FOR and AGAINST and any comments.

Thanks

by me.

Here's the formal ruling from "Mr IOTA" himself. As we had
expected, none of our islands require any special validation.

Note that Roger also mentioned the IOTA rule that lets the operator
activating the island to count that island in his own IOTA totals.

Bernie--If Melonie operated under your call, you can't count any
island contacts she made in your total.

Finally, as expected, Roger pointed out the difference between
Duck Island (which counts) and Duck on Nags Head (which
doesn't).

Hello Steve

Contacts by data modes are acceptable so long as they are not
aided by repeaters or satellites, and are not cross-band or cross-
mode. The islands activated may also count towards the home
individual scores of the US operators (Directory H.1.1).

As regards contacts with other islands made from these stations,
they may be counted for the normal single operator category award
(if the licence holder only operates and it is his home call) or,
otherwise, for a club category award.

None of these IOTA groups constitutes a "rare", "most wanted", or
"difficult" group, which would require special validation.

The islands you mention all count subject to your checking on one.
Duck Island is the island south of Roanoke Island - this counts.
Duck, the town on the long peninsula that runs through Corolla,
Southern Shores, Nags Head etc does not count for IOTA (my
brother visits this town quite often!). I mention this just because
there may be confusion that the long peninsula is an IOTA island,
hi! Please can you pass the word along as we want to avoid
problems with QSL cards wrongly showing an IOTA number.
Maybe you could let me know the answer.

Subject: IOTA Question

Roger -

The PODXS 070 Club (www.podxs.com) has incentivized its
members to participate in mini-DXpeditions during this month of
August, to publicize the ability of PSK31 stations to operate from
portable locations. (We called this APE--August PSK Expedition.)
Seven trips were scheduled, although only five actually happened.
Four of these five operated from islands that are listed in existing
IOTA groups. (The fifth was from a river in Minnesota.)

As a very new participant in IOTA activities, I would like to
confirm (for the club members) that these four will not only count
for club purposes, but can be used as contacts for IOTA awards.
Specifically, I am trying to confirm my reading of the IOTA book
(11th edition) that none of these IOTA groups constitute a "rare",
"most wanted", or "difficult" group, which would require special
validation actions by the operator(s).

KF4FHS operated from Vashon Island, NA-065
W3HF operated from Bogue Banks Island, NA-112
AA8QQ operated (we think) from Duck Island, NA-067
K8IJ operated from Estero Island, NA-069

Thanks for any clarification you can give on this matter.

73,
Steve Melachrinos

Re: IOTA & the Outer Banks

Steve W3HF

Does your directory have any information on who to contact, to find
this out ?

Bernie
There are a few rules regarding what IOTAs would require formal
approvals. They include:

1. previously unnumbered groups
2. groups listed in the published lists of "rare" and "most wanted"
3. "difficult" groups, defined as islands with restrictions on landing or
operating an amateur radio station
4. "other, albeit less rare, IOTA groups activated by amateurs
cruising on small yachts"

None of the islands listed for the APEs meet rules 1 or 2 above,
based on the lists in the book. I don't think any meet either three or
four, either. So I think we're all in the clear.

The point of contact for clarifications on the above rules is Roger
Balister, the IOTA program manager for RSGB. I will take the
initiative to contact him with all the known IOTA APEs--KF4FHS,
K8IJ, W3HF/4, AA8QQ (maybe? depending on which island)--for a
"formal" reading.

BTW, if Dimitri had made it to NA-144, he would have come close to
requiring validation. The rules say any IOTA group that is currently
credited to less than 10% of the members requires validation. NA-
144 is sitting at 13%.

W3HF the Energizer bunny??

N3DQU@...

Now one would think that after making over 100 APE contacts from Bogue
Banks Island, NC, pulling up stakes a week later only to drive down to
Florida to try it again, then heading back up north to eastern Pennsylvania
in anticipation of that joyous post vacation experience known as the "great
unpacking of the car", that one would be understandably tired and in need of
some greatly deserved sack time after such a trip. Well, that was W3HF's
itinerary alright, but what did he do when he got home? Did he collapse on
the doorstep, only to be awakened by the chirping of the morning birds and
the warm, wet feeling of the neighbor's dog relieving himself on his
prostrate body? Not even close!
Seems that as soon as Steve got in the door, he was hitting the
books...his callbooks that is! W3HF has quite an extensive collection of ham
radio callbooks dating back to ye olden days of ham radio dontcha know, and
rather than numbly downing a couple cold ones on the way to the comforting
arms of his Sterns&Foster, he responded to a cry for help from a total
stranger who was searching for his grandfather's callsign! Yes, believe it! I
saw it myself on the ham radio history reflector! "This guy" (I told myself)
"is totally nuts!"
So my question is this...Do you think that perhaps, W3HF is the Energizer
bunny in disquise? He seems to have an unlimited supply of energy and he just
doesn't know when to stop! He might have even figured out how to power his
'817 by Steve-power! Hey om Steve, nice job on the research, now it's
beddie-bye time!! 73 de Jay N3DQU.
