YL800 Special Prefix
N3DQU@...
Just wanted to let you guys know that the Latvian Amateur Radio League
(LARL) is celebrating the 800th anniversary of Riga, the capital of Latvia. Look for Latvian hams using the special prefix YL800 on cw, ssb and hopefully psk31. Andris YL2FD/YL800FD says that there will be a certificate offered for working these YL800 stations. In addition, there may be an endorsement in the works from the 070 Club for working YL800 stations on psk31. Stay tuned for more information on this special certificate and endorsement. In the meantime, be on the lookout for them YL800 stations and join in the celebration!...73 de Jay N3DQU.

Re: MixW 2.0
DL2AYL@...
Ok, I meant that if you read the operators qth and state you certainly will know
in which direction you'll have to turn the beam. For the dx outside the USA the program shows the correct direction anyway. 73's Erika/DL2AYL

MixW 2.0
packet2@...
Hi Erika/DL2AYL
Thanks for the prompt reply as to information about the subject software
program.
As I said I am interested in using any aid which will improve working
DX.
I am just a little confused about what you mean by this sentence:
"The problem with the vanity calls can't be solved by any program, but
as I said the MixW can be combined with the call book CD and if the guy has an
entry you'll make out the right direction." Just what do you mean
by "entry?" If the call book CD gives the operator's FCC call
sign (vanity or otherwise) containing a region number other than
his/her actual QTH, how will the call book CD correct that?"
Of course you are right, that in most cases, the operator just
beams in the general direction of a desired DX source. I am just
trying to understand how the software works in theory.
Thanks much,

Re: MixW 2.0
DL2AYL@...
Hi Onis,
If you are working from a different qth you can put in your new coordinates and the program will show you the appropriate directions. The problem with the vanity calls can't be solved by any program, but as I said the MixW can be combined with the call book CD and if the guy has an entry you'll make out the right direction. Anyway my experience is, it doesn't matter too much if your beam is 5 or 10 degree off the right position. In Germany for instance the number in the call doesn't give any hint from where the station is operating. 73's Erika/DL2AYL

MixW 2.0
packet2@...
Erika/DL2AYL:
I am always interested in any process that increases the chance for a DX contact and thanks for giving out some information on your software program. But what happens with MixW 2.0 if the operator is operating at an offsite location different from his callsign QTH? Also, in the US, with the many vanity callsigns, often the operator's actual QTH may different from the region on the callsign? There has been some criticism of the Vanity program because of this. In these cases, the subject software program or any other software program controlling on the just the callsign would misdirect the operator's aiming wouldn't it? 73 Onis K5COX

Re: DXAtlas Program
DL2AYL@...
Just for information, the software I'm using for the digital modes is MixW 2.0.
That program shows automatically where to turn the beam and which dxcc it is when you double-click on the callsign on your screen. You can combine it also with the common call book CD's. If you are interested you'll find a link on the home page of WA2VOS/Jim. the address is www.nvbb.net/~jaffejim . 73's Erika/DL2AYL

Re: DXAtlas Program
Steve W3HF
Steve, W3HFOnis - That's what I end up doing, but then again, I only have a dipole. I think if I had a directional antenna, I would use the program for: 1. calculating antenna bearings 2. trying to guess propagation conditions to different locations from gray line positions, and pointing the antenna appropriately You can also use it to find the location of a station from an obscure prefix. For example, if I heard a C9 station, and didn't remember what that was, I could sort the prefix list by prefixes and find out that it's Mozambique. Then I could click on the listing to pinpoint it on the map, or right-click on the listing to show details, like which CQ or ITU zone it's in, or the bearing/distance to it. It can also be useful to see the call district divisions in other countries. (You have to zoom the map to see this.) All US hams understand our own 10 districts (I hope), but I am pretty uninformed of the way other countries define their districts. For example, I didn't realize that the two members of the 070 club that live in Turkey (TA7I and TA9J) both live in the eastern part of that country, and that the low numbers (2, 3, 4, and 5) are more to the west. For now, the program is more of an interesting way to explore the DXCC list graphically, instead of perusing a 12-or-so-page text file printout. And there's a little bit of a history lesson there, with the deleted prefixes still in the database. By the way, Alex is interested in any comments or suggestions people have for future releases. Things he's planning to do some day are: 1. Maidenhead grid squares (I don't know if it's only 4-digit or all the way to 6-digit) 2. IOTA listings (if the RSGB allows him to) I've suggested things like manual entry of the home location, and user-defined "other" locations that can be saved (like stations you have a sked with, etc). I'd be glad to forward any suggestions to him if anyone wants to send them to me instead of to him. And thanks for asking. Steve W3HF

DXAtlas Program

Steve, W3|HF
The program sounds interesting, but I was wondering just how to apply it on a day to day basis. The way I have been doing DX is just work the bands every chance I get and hope the propagation is in. Onis K5COX

Neat Program
Steve W3HF
Hope you guys don't mind, but I agreed to give a little publicity to a
program a friend of mine wrote. If you are offended by the mention of a commercial product, please forgive me and delete this message immediately. The program is called DX Atlas and it's a computerized map for the DXer. It includes rectangular and azimuthal map projections, can instantly zoom the map and change its center, plots prefixes on the maps, shows CQ and ITU zones, calculates antenna bearings and distances (short and long path), shows the gray line and sunrise/sunset times, and much more. You can find out more about it at http://www.dxatlas.com It's shareware--US$29.95 to register, but there's an introductory price of US$23.95 through this weekend. Thanks for looking. Steve W3HF Formal Disclaimer: Although I do not receive anything from the sales of the program, I did write the help files, and received a free copy of the program in return.
