In Naval Aviation we call that cockpit problems and yes, I have done that on more than one occasion. I have just written it off to a busy world and old age. ;-)))

I shouldn't admit this, but what the heck (most of us have probably done something similar). A week or so ago I flipped the radio on after a few weeks of inactivity (been busy with other things). I heard some weak signals on 40- and 80-meters, but nothing really popped out. Calling cq yielded no takers. I double- and triple-checked my antenna switch to make sure I was on the G5RV (I was). The radio's tuner seemed to tune things well on every band from 160- thru 20-meters, so I figured the bands were just lousy, and I found something else to do.

Fast forward to the next day. Doing something else in the shack, I happened to glance at the tuner and noticed it in the "bypass/dummy load" position (a setting I don't typically use). Flipping it to the proper setting confirmed that signals are a lot better when an antenna's connected to the rig.

In hindsight, it would have been more interesting had I worked someone QRP on a dummy load for an antenna (maybe someone has and can share that tale). Instead, it's just a tale of lousy configuration management.

I've seen some activity but its seems pretty quiet overall. I am chalking it up to psk deathmatch starts in 21 hours. That or my antenna is acting like a dummy load tonight. It has a mind of its own. Some nights it is an antenna, some nights its a dummy load.

24 hour Feld Hell Sprint this Saturday!

scollaysquarewriter <WB2HTO@...>

The Feld Hell Club wraps up 2009 with a 24-hour Sprint celebrating the birthday of the man who invented Hellschrieber, Dr. Rudolph Hell.

Date: Saturday, December 12th, 2009 (Not Dr. Hell's actual birthday but because of a major RTTY contest occuring on the 19th, we have moved up the date.)

Time: 0000 - 2400 Z

MODES: All modes of Hell are allowed

BANDS: All non-WARC bands are allowed

EXCHANGE: RST, FH #, COUNTRY

POINTS: 3 for a each member QSO, 1 for a non-member QSO. You get points for a QSO with the same ham on a different band.

MULTIPLIERS: 1 for each state, province, or country. You do NOT get multiplier points for a QSO on different bands, only contact points above.

BONUS POINTS:

1) 200 points for your first QSO on each band with a ham in Eggmühl, Bavaria

2) 200 points for your first QSO on each band with a ham in a town named Hell. There's one such town in Michigan (W/K 8), one in Norway (LA), and we also found one on the Grand Cayman Islands (ZF)

3) 100 points goes for your first QSO on each band with a ham in Germany (D)

Scores will be submitted via a web-based autologger. No messy files or logs to submit. See the club web site www.feldhellclub.org for more details and the URL.

Good luck!
