How many are planning on playing in the 40 meter sprint.I will give it a shot. So, count me as a "Yup." Now, since being attic-bound, I really don't have a decent 40m antenna, I will be working my usual QRP with my MP1 out in the backyard. Pretty wimpy stuff. So, if no one hears me... that's why. 40m Sprint question
Bernie <kf4fhs@...>
I'd like to take a little poll.
How many are planning on playing in the 40 meter sprint. All you need to do is reply to this email and type yes or no, or add any comments you would like. I'm just trying to find out how everyone feels about it. Thanks & 73, Bernie / KF4FHS

Bernie <kf4fhs@...>
Hey Again Everybody,
I've received some emails from several folks, stating that it doesn't seem like using local time is the best thing to do. Welllll...... conditions on 40 meters are not the best all over the world all at the same time, we didn't want to penalize anyone by having to start the contest in the morning while people on the other side of the globe were enjoying 40 meters in the evening. That's also why we are giving certificates to the winners in each TIME ZONE instead of just an overall winner. Yeah, it's different, but nobody ever said it couldn't be fun. 73, Bernie / KF4FHS

Re: 40 Meter PSK Sprint
Steve W3HF
The date and times are Saturday, 6-July-2002, 2000 - 0200 YOUR LOCALI'll try to be around, but it will be late. We'll be returning from a day at HersheyPark, and I probably won't be able to get on the radio until local midnight (0400z). So if anyone is still on at that time, look for my faint trace (5 watts into the 40m attic dipole). :-) Steve W3HF

Re: 40 & 80m
Bernie <kf4fhs@...>
Hey Everyone,
There was talk on the reflector about generating more PSK activity on the 40 meter band, and someone mentioned a short, fun, sprint type contest. It sounded like a good idea to me , so I emailed N3DQU and volunteered to do the thing if it was OK with him. We coresponded for several hours last night trying to figure a way where everyone would have the best shot at good conditions on 40 meters, and we decided that to use local time would the most fair for everyone. We also looked at the contests that are being held in July and this was the only time that nothing else was going on. I know it's short notice, but it's not another field day, only a 6 hour sprint, so it doesn't take a whole lot of preparation, tune to 40 meters and start sending CQ. BTW: If anyone is interested, Digipan will log local time by clicking "view" and then un-checking "UTC". Pretty simple eh? 73, Bernie / KF4FHS

No need to put it on the back burner just for me, Jay. It was a good idea to have the contest to gain interest in 40 meter PSK, but I don't think anyone expected it to happen at the drop of a hat. I'm just expressing my own opinion. It will be interesting to see what others think. This is a holiday weekend and many folks are off on a trip somewhere. If I can participate, I'll be there.

With the National Forests closed to the public for the time being here in Colorado Springs area, we want to try to get some camping time in and a commercial CG or National Park are the only other options. That's one reason I voiced my opinion, as we just might take off. I'm not griping about the timeframe of the contest, Jay, just wondered why it had to happen this weekend? 73, Dick WB0DUL@arrl.net

We just thought it would be nice of you to send the contest winner to Jamaica for a week to rest up from the pressures of the contest. The winner can take his wife or girlfriend, or both. :)

Have fun at Cedar Point, Chris. We used to live in Lima and it's a fun place to visit (Cedar Point, not Lima) Hi Hi.

I agree with you on the short notice for the contest. I'm a little confused as to why it has to be this weekend unless they want it to tie in with the holiday, thus the name "Firecracker Sprint." A lot of folks would participate, even those who were not 070 members, if there were more time. I'd love to participate, but may not be able to do so because of the short notice. The original idea for a 40 meter PSK contest was to generate interest in 40 meters for the mode, and I fully support that idea. I wish it had been my idea. But such short notice isn't going to generate a lot of interest. I hope the organizers will reconsider and change the date to one a little further along on the calendar. Again, have fun at Cedar Point. That will be more fun than a PSK contest. :) 73, Dick WB0DUL@arrl.net

40m sprint debate
N3DQU@...
Before you guys dump on Bernie, everyone should know that it was my idea
to base the start times on local time, not Bernie's. We HFer's are so used to using GMT for everything, that it seems almost sacreligious to base an HF contest on local time, but here is my reasoning on the subject, see if it seems logical to you. If we start the 40m sprint at say 0000z, then for those on the east coast this would be great time, 2000 to 0200 local. The long skip would be opening up on 40m and we would not have to lose much sleep in the bargain. VE9DX would probably have a pretty good time in the sprint. But look at them poor guys over in Europe...starting at 0000z is like 0100 local time in Germany. Doesnt really strike me as fair that Erika & Co. has to spend a sleepless night staying up to play in the sprint. The band would start to go south for them halfway thru the contest as the sun started to come up in the east and the f layers died out. Not a fun time for our members across the pond and Erika would look like heck come the morning! Now let's take a look at the guys on the left coast. For them, starting at 0000z is 1700 local time or thereabouts, hardly a peak time on 40m. They might manage a few good hops towards the end of the sprint, but for most of the contest the props will be short for them. I really dont think the left coasters will have much fun either and N6YIH will start boo-hooing again abt how they are always getting shortchanged out in their part of the world :o) So that is my rationale for basing the sprint start time on local time. We made the sprint 6 hours long to try and overlap the propagation across a greater distance, so there is a good chance of working Europe fm the east coast and Hawaii from the west. Also, you do not have to log in local time, just work the contest starting at 2000 local time and log in zulu as usual. Because of the short time, a sprint is pretty tough to make it fair for everybody. I think basing the start time on local time is the best way of achieving this...Jay N3DQU

That sounds good on 10 M or even a 80M sprint would be good. I will not be able to be in the 40 M sprint this time, I have to take the kids away to Cedar Point for the weekend. The family always seem to know when to mess up my radio time. Next time I think it would be nice to have a little more notice. Good Luck to everyone in the Sprint. George, MM0CBL is on 20 meter most of the time now he said that 10 meter has been out for him the last 2 weeks so look for him there. Chris KC8LJN

But if we do the sprint using local times instead, then 40m will be good for everybody. No, you wont be able to work everybody in the contest, but at least everyone will have more or less the same band to play on. I think it will work out ok...Jay N3DQU Yahoo!
