Hello all,

After receiving an email questioning why no repeater contacts allowed
for the award, I've changed that rule to all contacts are allowed. The
intent is to have FUN and to work Alaskan hams. I've even included a new
category for the award. The "The String and Two Cans" Endorsement. Yes,
if any ham makes a contact with an Alaskan ham using a string and two
cans and submits a picture of it and log, I'll issue a special
endorsement for the award. I think that covers just about any type of
medium for this award - hi!

Have FUN in 2009!

Alaska 50th Award Endorsement - Two Cans & String!

Edward R. Breneiser <breneiser@...>

Yes, in the interest of fairness and FUN, there now is the "Two Cans &
String" Endorsement for the GORC Alaska 50th Award. Plus a prize will be
given to the ops, not necessarily hams who make a contact using this
medium and send in a picture and log of the contact including distance
to GORC.

This all started with the repeater contact issue -hi!

Hi Steve, W3HF

Thanks for your comments and I'll try to address them best I can.
The intent of the award is for hams around the world to work Alaskan
Hams for the 50th Celebration. You are correct as it is a GORC Award,
I'm always open to suggestions for change. I included EcoLink as I want
more hams to become fimiliar with it. I'm an AEC in ARES/RACES and
EcoLink is a valuable tool we hams should at least know something about.
I must confess that I've never operated EcoLink.

As for satellites, no problem here Steve. If you make a contact with an
Alaskan ham via a bird -- ok!

Steve, I just changed my mind. From now on all contacts even those made
with a string and two cans will count towards the award! I just want all
hams to have FUN and celebrate Alaska's 50th Year of Statehood.

Thanks for the email Steve!

72/73,
Ed, WA3WSJ

There's only one stipulation, no repeater contacts, but EcoLink in
fine.
Ed -

I realize that since this is your (GORC's) award, you are free to
establish whatever rules you want, and I wish you the best with it.
But I find it very strange that you would disallow a contact that
requires both stations to use amateur radio frequencies/radios,
simply because there's an intermediate radio between them, but allow
a "QSO" between computers belonging to two amateur radio operators
that uses only the internet for the transmission medium, and never
uses any amateur radio equipment or amateur-radio-allocated RF
spectrum. In fact, an Echolink contact and the Skype call that I make
to my son in Florida are fundamentally the same. Admittedly there is
different software, and you can't obtain an Echolink account without
a valid amateur radio license, but they're both still VOIP calls,
with no radios involved.

If your intent is really to disallow repeater contacts, I'd suggest
you clarify that on the web page to avoid future questions and
confusion. And while you're at it, you might also want to address the
special case of satellite QSOs. (While satellites are indeed
repeaters, satellite QSOs are valid for DXCC and VUCC, for example,
unlike other repeater contacts.)
