[PSK-TARA] Pactor III ....Please Read!

N3DQU@...

From Peter G3PLX

This is strictly-speaking off-topic, but the subject potentially affects ALL
narrow-band digital modes, and that includes PSK31, RTTY, Pactor 1, Pactor 2,

and I will include CW too just for completeness.

The company SCS which manufactures the PTC digital mode terminal, and which
invented Pactor, has now released the latest Pactor-3 mode, which can be
retro-installed into existing PTC-2e hardware, and will be available in new
purchases.

This new mode is much wider bandwidth that Pactor-1 or Pactor-2. It can be up

to 2.4 kHz wide, so that makes it as wide as an SSB emission. If mode-3 is
enabled in two Pactor-equipped stations, one Pactor station calling the
other on a channel which is 500Hz wide with other QSOs either side, could
switch without warning to 2.4 kHz wide, WITHOUT CHECKING THAT THE ADJACENT
CHANNELS ARE CLEAR. It is therefore very important that PT3 is ONLY used on
channels which are 2.4 kHz wide
before the QSO starts.

The present worldwide bandplans do not distinguish between digital modes of
different widths, they just say that all digital modes should operate in
specific bands. I have informed RSGB about the latest developments, and asked

them to inform IARU and debate this urgently at the next IARU meeting. If
nothing is done to change the bandplans, there will be a great potential for
conflict. I believe that the intention of the
bandplans has always been to keep modes of different widths separate, and
that this intention has always been met in the past, but only because digital

modes were always narrow-band. Now that there will be wide digital modes, I
think we need to change the way the bandplan is worded, so that we CONTINUE
to separate wide and narrow modes. THIS MEANS PUTTING PT3 HIGHER IN THE BAND
THAN THE PRESENT NAARROW-BAND DIGITAL MODES.

In fact on the popular amateur bands, 80, 40, 20, this can be done without a
change, at least it can in the region 1 IARU bandplan, because the sections
3600-3620, 7040-7045, and 14101-14112 are already shared between digital
modes and SSB.

I would therefore ask anyone who receives this reflector to copy this message

to other discussion groups, especially those concerned with all narrow-band
amateur modes including PSK31, RTTY, Pactor, and CW, with the intention to
agree that ALL Pactor-3 activity should be inside the sections of the bands
that I have shown above, and certainly NOT below 3600, 7040, and 14100 where
narrow-band modes are normally used. In the case of 10MHz, it is well-known
that this is a shared band and the IARU bandplan prohibits SSB because of
this. PT3 should therefore also be
prohibited on this band. This may all change in September if there is some
IARU resolution agreed at the next IARU region 1 meeting.

Peter

Hi Erika,

I've been having that problem for about 2 weeks, it takes about 4 or
5 hours for my posts to be sent. I found that by going to the Yahoo
Groups website and posting from there, they go out pretty quick.

das neue LONP Diplom zu
beantragen, bitte schickt Eure Log-Daten nach Mglichkeit per E-mail und

Hi All, just returned from the eQSL web site with the news that the ARRL is NOT accepting eQSL's for credit! To this end the eQSL guys have returned the inbox to the old style (making it much quicker and easier to use). Seems the ARRL will only be accepting electronic stuff from the logbook of the world programme.

Re: New Award

Bills4570@...

Steve,

I had almost exactly the same experience: ended up with
55 contacts. Several of those I had to delete (by mere
days) were european contacts made on 10M. I haven't heard
hide not hair of them since! Unfortunately, 10M isn't
what it was last year. I hope they're still around in 11
years!

Well, enough sniveling and whining.....

I'll be interested in hearing how you like the GAP Titan.

Regards, Bill
KG6EXF

This is really fun I have contacted 99 members NOW after the List been checked I
only have 57 and the most of the ones I had to remove from my contact list were
by days. some I contacted the day before they recived membership, I was really
suprised how many members I had contacted within 5 days of them getting there
membership some before and some after.

I just be sitting on my pitty pot here and now that I have said that I am off to
contact all the members (again) so looking for all of you out there. And I just
ordered a GAP Titan DX vertical so I should be a lot better on 40 and 80 meters
very soon.

Re: New Award

DL2AYL@...

Hi Steve,
you are not alone... it's the same here and worse, I have deleted some
contacts because I had worked them before on the same band and no qsl was
necessary and now it turned out the deleted contacts were the ones that
would count for the new award. Nevertheless, I have just 5 to catch now.

Subject: [070] LONP Rules

Announcing Membership in the
Loyal Order of the Narrow-Banded Phaseshifters (LONP)

Purpose - Now that the 070 Club is over 200 members strong, this award will encourage members to work each other using PSK31. Contacts with non-members do not count for this award.

Valid QSO - A valid QSO is one made via PSK31 mode on the HF bands between two 070 Club members, both of whom meet the criteria for membership in the PODXS 070 Club at the time the QSO was made (see membership criteria below).

Bands - All HF bands are allowed, 160 - 6M, including WARC bands. All contacts must be 2-way PSK31. No repeater, cross-mode or cross-band contacts are allowed.

Membership Criteria - Membership in the PODXS 070 Club is determined by the date of issue of the 070 Club membership certificate. For this award, one's membership in the 070 Club shall be considered to begin at 0000Z on the date of issue as noted on his/her 070 Club membership certificate.

Alpha List - The reference database for LONP is the current Alpha List of members showing their membership dates. A copy of this reference is available direct from K8IJ. Updates to this reference list shall be made available periodically to reflect changes in the 070 Club membership, including changes in members' callsigns. This list shall be the final and determining reference for this award.

Operator-based Award - This is an operator-based award program and as such, places no restrictions on the participants' respective geographic locations at the time any QSOs submitted for this award were made. QSOs made while portable or mobile in any way are all valid for LONP, provided that the QSOs were made under the member's callsigns as listed in the 070 Club Alpha List and all other conditions for the award are met.

Lifetime QSO points - A PSK31 QSO with another 070 Club member counts once for 1 Lifetime QSO point. Additional QSOs with the same station are not valid for application for the LONP Award or endorsements. Contacts with non-members do not count for this award.

Awards - The basic LONP Award, a certificate suitable for framing, is awarded for a total of 100 Lifetime QSO points. Endorsement stickers for the basic LONP Award will be available in increments of 50 additional Lifetime QSO points.

Fee - Please include $1 US cash money, no IRCs please, to help with expenses.

Applications - QSL cards are NOT required. Send log data showing callsigns and QSO dates only. Be sure to include your call, your name as you'd like it on your certificate, $1 US, and your mailing address in your application. Please send your application to:

Charlie Trice, K8IJ
18900 Wentworth Drive
Miami, FL 33015-2922

A listing of members presented the LONP Award and endorsements will be posted on the 070 Club website as they are awarded. All applications are subject to verification.

Any questions, or for a current Alpha List with membership dates, please send an e-mail to k8ij@... or via regular mail at the address given above.
