Pile up handling (Was: TI9M)
Costas Krallis SV1XV <sv1xv@...>
On the subject of pile-up handling by DX-stations, it
is true it takes a lot of experience and self discipline to do it smoothly. I have only handled a few minor pile-up with SP and DL on 6 m SSB, so I can undertand how demanding the job of a real DX operator is. The worst DX operator I have encountered was an EA who activated a rare IOTA close to my location on 21 MHz SSB. He was listening on his own frequency and, while propagation was good for me and signals booming at S9, I was unable to have a QSO after 2 hours of well timed calls. What was wrong with him? Instead of calling "QRZ? THIS IS XYZ, IOTA XX-000" and listen, he would consistently call one of the kilowatt stations who were breaking over the last QSO. You can easily guess the chaos caused by this practice. DX Ops etc
Duncan <zl3jt@...>
de Jungle Telegraph
From all the correspondance and critique of DX operations, it appears to me, that an Amateur Radio license Test, should include actual operating on the air. It is all very well to criticise people from a distant place. We really can't imagine the stress that is created trying to deal with a huge pile-up, with people still calling when the operator actually calls a particular station. I really admire those operators! We should be critical only of our own operation of our own stations. We are the ones that create the problems! And all the comments of the 'supervisors' and 'cops' who laud over the DX station's frequency, only cause irritation and consequent interferrence. The DX-pedition is not the problem, the callers are! Just as a previous guy wrote, unless there is discipline, there will be a shambles. Self discipline is required.... I live in a very remote country as far as distance from anywhere is, but I manage OK to work the DX, albeit at the right time for propagation.... But in doing this I spend 99.9% of the time listening, so that I can time my call to perfection....It doesn't always work, but the proof is in my Log! 15000 DX qsos, 333 countries worked, 311 in CW, 162 in psk31, over 600 IOTA entities worked. I have worked right across the Pacific Ocean to N6XQ on 6M....PSK! It was easy, only timing! Thanks Jack, for listening at the right time!.... But I too, am appalled at the antics of so called 'Amateurs'. You must employ a sense of humour in order to keep yourself sane... Good luck and good 'DX'! __________________________________________________ Advertise with ZFREE - to find out more click below http://www.zfree.co.nz/about-us/advert.html

Re: PW0T

Lid List and was going to put it oout on here, but if I did, I'dhave to put the PW0T op at the top of it!Hear that, thats the best way to ruin your pile is to ignore your own rules. Gads Im missing the two biggest countries on PSK cause I cant find a stupid connector (New IC706MK2G and ACC is 13 pin vs 8 for my old 735) Start Old Crumudgeon mode Back in my day, when I was in the USN, I had the opportunity to be DX in several countries, most notable VQ9RS (Sep-Dec 1980). When I got on I would try to hold a qso with somebody before working the masses. I would always have someone break in with their call while in QSO. I would ask why he broke in, and would invariably get the "Well I need VQ9 your 59 thanks" to which I would reply that he just landed on the VQ9 Never to QSL list (We had one on the wall). Couple of those and wouldnt have break ins after that :). Consiquently as I ran the pileups I would stop and point out MY rules. I stated that I had 10,000 plus QSLs and didnt need any, so if you wanted to work me you would follow my rules to the letter or you would wind up on "the List" and explain what that list was. I would then say I want your call in full twice. Then if I got a partial I would answer back with XX or QX or what ever. If I heard anything else I would ask say KF8AAA you arnt XX you just lost a card. Couple those and that nonsense stopped in a heart beat and I could then run 6 a min if I really spun up. About every 10 - 15 mins I would give a synopsis of my rules. As far as the net cops, well I would mention those and If they were persistant I would just say the Net cops are causing me to QRT, BYE. And I would either shut it off or move bands. Even they disappeared after a while, cause I ran a tight ship. I thought it went well, and I got quite a rep on the air :). I had a few guys write my QSL Manager and plead their case but Lyle (Lyle Meek N6BLN) would write back that rules were rules and No card ment that no card. Out of 25000+ qso's I think I had 50 no cards in my log. Most guys followed pretty good. So yes, Unrulely pilups are a pain and annoying. But for me, I lay the blame flat square on the DX station. Its their pile up and if they would lay out simple rules, stick to them and Make it known that a Card Deny list is avail and used the crap would stop ASAP. Just my .02 Rick KF7QZ PS, I wish I could go on one these things to see if I could still do it :) :)

Bill. It "only" took me three hours and forty minutes to break through the pile, but then again I was QRP. :-) (I did have the big antenna here, though.) When I said "tnx Bill" he replied that it was "Alan, the other digimode op", but he'd pass along my gratitude to Bill. He also did a pretty good job of occasionally reminding everyone that he was listening up, what that meant, and not replying to anyone who called on his transmit freq. 73 Steve W3HF

Bill,
Don't let the waterfall filled with calls throw you off.
I had the same thing last night and still got through. Once I "bookmarked"
his frequency and then "bookmarked one for myself, it was simply a matter of
watching what he was doing and following the sequence. As soon as he said
"listening UP UP..." I switched to my bookmarled area and sent "TI9M de
WB0DUL WB0DUL." No "K" was sent as soon as his trace ended. I
stayed on the same spot and snagged him in 30 minutes and the competition was
fierce.
Just pick a spot a few cycles off his frequency and don't
worry about anyone else. He'll eventuall come back to you. BTW, they
will only be there thru Saturday, so if you want this one, you have to be
persistent. PSK is your salvation as opposed to SSB and CW where the
pileups are gigantic.
Good luck.

Dick - 070 # 180

Re: TI9M
Dick Thompson <wb0dul@...>
Hi Chris...
I finally captured TI9M at 0548 UTC on 2/28/02. He was
on 20 meters and a very smooth operator. I was beginning to think I'd
never get him, but when I checked the band last night before hitting the sack, I
saw he was on and decided to stay up until I snagged him. It took me a
half hour, but it finally happened.
What I found strange is the fact that after he would
acknowledge a contact & give a report, he would say "QRZ de TI9M listening
UP UP Pse K" and there were still stations trying to call him on his
transmitting frequency. Makes you wonder.
Anyway, glad you snagged the Island.
73,
Dick

Hi All,
Maybe someone can answer this question. I was listening to PW0T on 10 meters. (Ok, I was trying to work him too). The PW0T op kept saying UP UP or DOWN DOWN, then, ignoring the ops following his directions, continuously answered stations who called on his TX freq. How in the name of the Prop gods can you control a pile up doing this? I was sitting there making up a Lid List and was going to put it oout on here, but if I did, I'd have to put the PW0T op at the top of it! Maybe they should call Bill and ask his advice. 73 de Jay - AA8QQ

Costas,

I saw TI9M this evening too, but could not work him on 14 Mhz. Way too much competition! At my location, the 14 Mhz passband looked quiet when I first opened my waterfall. I was making some notations, and when I looked up, the waterfall was filled, wall to wall with traces. The next time I looked, there were only a couple. For a minute I thought there was a loose connection somewhere in my antenna or audio feed! Then, after copying some of the traces, I realized that nearly everyone on 14.070 was trying to work TI9M, and was responding to TI9M's advisory that he was working split, and "listening UP UP pse K". The waterfall would fill with traces in unison as soon as he stopped transmitting and began selecting his next station. Duncan's comments about the importance of listening (or watching) and figuring out what's going on became apparent....... It was a thing of beauty! Will try again later. de Bill KG6EXF

Thanks for the pointer! It took me only about 10 minutes to break through
