That is pretty much true across the country. hi hi
Difficult part is finding the non snakes in the mess. Every now and then one appears.

Illinois has a lot of snakes, but most of them ran for office.

Southern Illinois, south of a line from St. Louis to the east, has copperheads and rattlesnakes. Never saw a cottonmouth but was told they were there, too.

My Son and his late wife were living in Houston when last big hurricane came through (Harvey ?). Their Northern suburb was pretty much flooded out. Water came up to their doorstep and another 4 inches was have been into house. Guess that's why there are few, if any, basements in that area.
Snakes ? Not a big fan of them. Don't see many these days around here. Only big black snake I ever saw was in Southern Indiana, but it wasn't poisonous. Illinois supposedly has DesPlaines Valley Rattlers, but I've never seen one.

Speaking of "Herpetologists", & Houston...
I did a summer internship in engineering statistics at Rice University back in the mid '60's. There was a hurricane towards the end of August. Nothing new for me, as I'm from So. Louisiana.
What was quite unique though, one morning when leaving my campus housing headed to the chow hall, mid-storm, there, rolled up in a nice tight coil, on the front porch was a huge snake! It was a big, fat, black snake with a white mouth and triangular head. I guess it was escaping high water from someplace.
I called campus security and started using the back door!

I am only 57, but down here in Houston I feel like I need a Herpetologist, because when I go outside in the winter and it's sunny and nice, all I want to do is lay on a flat rock and take a nap, and when I go outside in the summer all I want to do is hide in the shade and bite people :-)
