Don’t be too quick to assume that just because you caught a 1k mile contact it’s not really NVIS.  Look at the pattern for an NVIS antenna and you’ll see it still has a fair amount of radiation down around 45 degrees even if the peak of that one big vertical lobe is up at 90 degrees!

Called CQ on the NVIS on 40m and worked Karl - K5KHK, 1027 miles at 449 on it.  So I guess the NVIS isn't exactly NVIS.  Back to the drawing board on that one.  Switched to the vertical and he was solid 599.  Thanks Karl!
