Pretty sure it was one of those stupid updates. Thanks Mike.

And sometimes applications use the sound card and leave it in various random states.

I have two sound cards - one for the digimodes and one for system sounds and other applications.

Yes, but my West Mountain Radio M-8 has not changed settings since at least 2006.   It was fine until recently where I noticed  the sound card sliders were almost double the original settings.  Don't know what changed, but it might have been something in soundcard components.
Otherwise, it's been flawless all this time through over 10.300+   contacts.
Don't want to get into which interface is better than others.  Just know I have confidence in my station (most days).  Also have a Signalink on the shelf.

That's why I like the Signalink, it's got knobs to twiddle.

Paul :
Thanks for that bit of info because it cleared up things here.
Somehow the soundcard sliders were set to almost double  normal level even though I haven't touched them in years. May have had something to do with age  or one of the upgrades the computer wants to do.
My crummy looking waterfall now looks less polluted !
Thanks again.

I have had similar issues in the past. It was definitely my sound card. After lots of experimentation, l learned that a good decode required a setting of at least 52% AND that distortion began at 55%. I have mine set at 54% now and I check it periodically. Invariably, whenever I have problems, the setting has been nudged. Resetting to 54% is my solution

It's not your radio !!   Seems to be at my end and saw same problem on 20m this morning.  Dan, KZ3T, reported same thing.  Looks to be something caused by propagation conditions or might be soundcard problems on my end; they looked a bit high so back off on sound card sliders a bit.
Don't worry , not your problem.     If it were  I would tell you to disassemble radio down to component level, put it all in a bag, twirl it around your head and squawk like a chicken  !    Hi !  Hi !

I will try to be on again this evening.  If anyone sees my signal looking like this please let me know so I can track down the problem.

Not sure it is your radio Jerry as I saw the same thing, center signal (main) with two side signals. When I went to them it was the same station.

Just looked at  K5SP  on 49m a few  minutes ago.   About 6-8 Hz. either side of his main signal I can see 2 "sidebands"  which have same data as main signal.  Might be my sound card flaking out ...  could be time to finally switch over to Tigertronics USB.
Appreciate the info.

Hi Jerry,
I’ve seen this often with very strong signals input to a soundcard.
I think the soundcard creates sidebar artifacts around the central strong trace that contain the same information as the primary signal.  The decode software algorithm will decode the sidebars just fine.
When the signals are at normal levels, I don’t see the sidebars.
Just my guess …

Subject: [070] Problem on 40m
Last night and today I saw a single signal on 40m and it was strange looking.  No setting on rig have changed as far as I know.
What I saw was three signals with the center one being the primary and on either side (about 10-15 hz) were sidebands with same station. It was a zero in MN who was working a KC7 .   Both stations seems to have same problems.   Am thinking it may be my FT-1000 MP  or weird propagation.
Any have an explanation ???
